Klien's intervention call was a call that seemed right on 1st and 2nd viewing. These things happen.

If not spotting players off-side from kicks is a disgrace to the game then every single SL referee must be disgracing the game every single week.

I don't think you do. Klein's call (while well intentioned) was an illegal intervention on his part. The video ref had no right to shout anything into the referees ear in that instance according to their instructions at the time. Klein took it upon himself to intervene and if that wasn't bad enough he got the call wrong.

Protecting the integrity of the game is something the RFL should take seriously.

Seeing an offside at a dead ball situation is fairly straightforward when the referee is correctly positioned. Ganson was at fault and at least had the good grace to accept that he was and issue an apology.

In an age where we're trying to help the referees as much as we can I see no problem with the ref upstairs helping out. They did it before and they still do it. Ganson was at it (again) on Saturday.

I don't see how that affects the integrity of the game any more than referring a decision to a Video Ref.

Maybe he was distracted by Newton infringing the 10 metres and refusing to stand still, despite being instructed to do so?

Ganson, as referee, is permitted to ask the video ref for clarification on an incident. That was either already in place or brought in after the MM1 incident. What shouldn't happen either then or now is the video ref interjecting without being asked to do so by the match official.



Hopefully I've covered that above. The referee makes the call and is the one to ask for assistance if he sees fit. Not someone else bellowing in his ear when not asked to do so.

A pity Klein decided not to bellow in Ganson's ear at that point to keep his illegal intervention's balanced.
