| Just gonna put it out there. Smith just on a year deal hardly building.
Kear the best coach we've had down Belle Vue and I'd have him again! With what's available we wouldn't be as bad. Kear is class.
Sign crap players on new deals for no reason that's why we ain't gonna get better.
Picked the same 2 forwards that wouldn't break a paper bag. Annakin and Walker would have added bit of clout. Finn far too slow we need to be getting the lad from Leigh ASAP. Too many workman like players, they didn't even work today. We need some flair and spirit. I would have JK BK TOMORROW

| Got to agree. We have been promised so much with new players, great coach etc. and are still as bad if not worse than last season.

| Would Brian Smith won with Batley against Leigh with the same players the answer is no. Kear is the best coach we've had at Belle Vue for quite some time.

Would Brian Smith have signed Jarrod Hickey?
news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/mobile/rug ... 459485.stm
Thought this signing damaged Kear's reputation at Trinity in my eyes. I still remember the photo shoot with Hickey whose huge gut was bulging through the Trinity shirt when stood alongside Kear.

| Hickey on reputation may have done well. Would Kear have give talentless Arundel a new deal though? This season only 2 positives ive seen are England and Jason Walton. Attack is flat as a fart. Its boring.

| Think John Kears time has been and gone. However I can understand why you are suggesting alternatives.
However what self respecting decent coach would want to step into Brian Smiths shoes at the present time.
Brian Smith is having to work with a bargain basement bunch of players the majority of which are journeymen
and cast offs. He has Agars old back room staff and not his own team and I am sure he would prefer better
quality there but has no choice.
Finally he has no funds to bring in the little bit of true quality that is needed.
If we could get a spine of 2 or 3 class players I think a good coach could get enough out of the bunch we have
to fit in and work around them to make us a more competitive team.
However when I attended the audience with night and heard our chairman joking that the only scrum half we have
the slowest player in the squad, you know you are in trouble.

Don't see where you're coming from with Arundel to be honest. I think Arundel has come on leaps and bounds since he has been with us & he's only 24 so plenty of time for improvement, not that he really needs it.
He's increased his speed significantly somehow over the pre season and his defence isn't really a problem...

Agree with the comment about the back room staff. Why oh why are we still stuck with the same plodders in Dickens, Clawson, Gilmour and whoever else is left. For me, before we start thinking about a new head coach (let's see what Smith has done in a year since he's joined) those three NEED TO GO,

A very valid opinion Prince Buster and you may be right. However, Kear is I believe, the same age as smith. One has has been an ever present coach, keeping up with changes and trends in the English game. The other was plucked from "semi" retirement on an "I'll give it a go, there's nothing to lose" basis.
Kear certainly had his detractors, but I would feel much better about his prospects of getting the best out of a bunch of squad players and journeymen than Brian Smith's chances.
This isn't defeatism, let's be realistic, we are two games into the new season for god's sake. However, I am very aware that we left it far too late last season to make any appreciable difference.
Mr Carter needs to mentally draw a line in the sand. Decide in his head where we need to be at a certain point. If we are there, great, we plough on. If not though, he needs to take firm action.

| Feel a bit for Brian Smith. Despite all the optimism on here prior to the season beginning he's really on a hiding to nothing. He has no more than an average bunch of players and you cannot coach what is not there. That said, I do feel that the sooner we get players like Simon and Moore back the more competitive we will be.
I would also now get Anakin a place- at least the lad runs with purpose.
Digressing a little - dropping Johnstone worked didn't it!

| I reckon it would have been worse if Johnstone had been opposite Solomona but of course we can blame that change for the loss if you like.

Probally did as he got a game under is belt where he crossed for a couple of trys including the winner im sure that will of give his confidence a boost as he had been playing poorly but had he played yesterday instead the result would not of changed and his confidence may of been dented further

I agree. Question is, why can't they even play to an average standard? Just have a look at some of the players we've got with their experience and pedigree:
Anthony Tupou (NRL SOO)
Nick Scruton (Bradford, Leeds)
Joe Arundel (Hull, Cas)
Bill Tupou (NRL)
Stu Howarth (St Helens, Salford)
BJB (Leeds, Salford)
Richard Owen (Cas)
Scott Anderson (NRL)
Mika Simon (Catalan)
Matty Ashurst (Salford, St Helens)
Craig Hall (Hull Kr, Hull FC)
Ashley Gibson (Salford, Cas)
Anthony England (Warrington)
Danny Kirmond (Hudds)
Tinirau Arona (NRL)
Sure I will have missed a handful but the point stands. These players although average, should be players that are the make up of a squad that competes week in and week out and even challenges for 8th spot.
All players that have played super league rugby all the way througfh their careers - some even at their peak age. Some with NRL experience, some have been at some damn good clubs. So, what is their excuse for underperforming so badly?

Ah if only it was that easy PT ! No, I was simply having a little go at those calling for him to be dropped.

64000 dollar question!
Sometimes it seems no matter who the player is that we bring in, they seem to come down to our lowly standard!

Smith just probably thought that it's not worth subjecting the lad to another 80 mins trying to deal with Solomona, Bet Johnson still wakes up in cold sweats thinking about that friendly game!

| I know he scored two tries but one was from a loose ball and one was a wonder try where Lyne did a pretty good job really.
I thought the move was the right move.
