Where the hell has the saying "now the wire" come from? Call me old fashioned but it just makes no sense!

It's sickeningly smarmy as well.

When I was a kid in the early 60's it was commom to hear this shouted at matches. Unsure of its derivation, but it certainly pre-dates you or me!

Its an old one from way back when, certainly not new.

it was used when i started watching as a little kid in 73/74 when we went to wembley twice

i liked it then and i still like it now!!!



NOW THE WIRE

Yep, definitely an old school saying.

It's been around since at least the 1950s. Not hard to understand. It's a sort of polite, enthusisatic way of saying 'get on with it Wires' and would be routinely shouted, for instance, if we'd just regained possession and had a chance to do something with the ball.

I say it at the start of every game as they run out. It's as old as grass, traditional. Maybe I should just sing "ner ne nerrr ner ne nerrr" instead or chant "Widnes Widnes" at St Helens when we are losing, perhaps if I slump to a low ebb I could sing "Championes".

'Now the wire' was definately a 70's chant as they used it in the song 'Primrose and Blue' for the 74 final.

Way older than that pal but I remember the song we released.
