Sadly, the club had no choice if it wasn't going to breach the RFL's Operational Rules, which require that players whose contracts are expiring should be notified of the club's intentions by the Friday following the last match of the regular season.



As we can all see, this takes no account of the play-offs and may therefore have affected the result. In years gone by, it may not have made any difference since, you would imagine, that if they were good enough to come second, they would be good enough to be retained, on the whole. The issue is this restructure which has abolished U20s and not replaced it, implying, in my opinion, that if a lad hasn't achieved SL status by the time he's 19, he is discarded. And that's exactly what has happened.



I'm still waiting for an explanation from the RFL as to how they believe this is going to encourage the expansion of home grown talent.

It is sad considering the tremendous effort put in by the U20's , however all SL clubs will have notified their respective U20's and there will similar stories throughout the league.

the difference will be the more well off SL clubs like Warrington & Wigan dual registering over 19's players with teams like Swinton & Leigh et al.

Warrington will loan up to 6 of their squad to Swinton and presumably have similar tie ups with other teams meaning they can effectively billet a complete 13 in the lower leagues.



Rather than even the odds and promote academy players to play for their hometown SL clubs , the gap between income in SL is manifesting itself more & more on the field .

there are teams that can spend to the full salary cap with International Signings & run a shadow team of dual registered players , and those that struggle to pay their 1st team.

At present we cannot even hang on to our 1st 13 never mind U20's and are uncertain about our financial future .

All this b0llocks by the RFL about the Francise system bringing a level playing field has just not materialised (and which lunatics thought it would)

We can not afford to keep our talented young players or form an alliance with a Championship club....... meanwhile



Wigan need a new half back pairing so go out and buy two new players one on for a supposed substantial amount.

Salary caps just ignored now and the RFL letting clubs get away with it.

A club who have fiddled the books for years getting backing and then allowed a new Francise.



It would appear that the RFL want to keep a little band of clubs who win everything year in year out and fook the rest.

The franchise system should have been a good idea, allowing clubs to develop young talent without having to worry about relegation. It could work if the mindset was right in both the coaches and the fans. Some coaches unfortunatley would prefer to work with thirty something Aussies rather than 19 year old Lancastrians while fans are constantly criticising the club for lack of succcess on the field.



This season, despite the Antipodean contingent, Salford did not achieve their potential. Why not then, particularly with the shortage of funds, stop over paying these over the hill retirees and put the kids in. They might take some batterings in the first year, but if they genuinely have the potential, by years two and three they should be starting to perform. And the fans will surely get behind the local talent and cheer them on?

The licensing system only really works if a) everyone is spending near enough to the salary cap, and b) not cooking the books.







Only to a point. This isn't Bilbao we're talking about. If Salford were really struggling at the bottom of the league as a result, some people would stop going and/or whine for investment in decent players.

I would like to see the RFL enforce a rule change where all Superleague clubs must field x number of young players below a certain age in the 17? Maybe 3 of the 17 have to be 20 years old or below. This would ensure the development of 42 youngsters and would give them invaluable experience each week.

How will SL clubs go on with this rule with the new academy changes?



2011 At least 8 home grown players.



Home grown players - any player still under 21 and/or has completed 3 years service with the same clubs academy set up.



I can only imagine that the clubs that finished below the top 8 will not be able to fulfil this criteria in 2012 and beyond!!

As far as I am aware Warringtons tie up with Swinton means it is only Swinton they can dual register players with.I also believe that we can register up to ten players, absolute madness as far as I am concerned a maximum of six with only four allowed to play would be about right.

In effect we can take any of Warringtons squad of players so if they had the likes of Morley returning from injury he could get match fitness with us along with any others.

Can't blame Swinton in getting that tie up since we can't operate an A team.

I do feel sorry for your youth team since they have had a half decent season and now face being broken up since your chances of getting a similar agreement with a Championship club with now have to be either in Yorkshire or Cumbria, Leigh are linked to Wigan I believe.

Slowly but surely the RL and SLE are killing the game with this kind of instruction.

How do you, as a fan, feel about it? Powell and Aston were vocal, and quite prickly, about the prospect of Super League clubs coming in and dictating coaching policy.

No culpabilty intended to Swinton in accepting Warrington's Dual Reg offer.

however if this replicated Championship sides could be fielding 50 -60 SL players and risking losing there own identity and becoming more like Toyota Cup teams in the NRL ,

I can't disagree with either comment. Of course this could easily dilute our team and in effect make us little better than Warrington's A Team.You would however like to think that the powers that be use this as it is intended to be used and restrict the numbers used.

Will Warrington dictate training etc well that remains to be seen, however knowing and respecting Steve McCormick I doubt he would remain as head coach if he thought the teams identity was being taken.



what ever happens all Championship clubs have been backed into a corner to a degree apart from those like Featherstone and Sheffield who have a strong backing anyway.
