FRIDAY 7/5/10
Leeds Rhinos U20 28 - 12 Salford City Reds U20
[iTwo tries from Liam Hood secured the points for Leeds Rhinos U20s in their 28-12 win over Salford in the Valvoline Cup at Headingley Carnegie. The Rhinos U20’s returned to Headingley Carnegie for the first time this season to face Salford but Willie Poching was short of a number of his first choice players due to call ups to the first team squad.
The home side fell behind early on after unforced errors in the early exchanges put themselves under pressure. Centre Max Wiper opened the scoring after five minutes before hooker Gareth Owen backed up well to take Toby Adamson’s inside pass to score between the posts. Marc Sneyd converted both to make it 12-0.
The visitors missed two try scoring chances after that as first some good defence shepherded winger Adam Clay into touch and then referee Stockman spotted a forward pass to deny another effort.
The Rhinos slowly got into the game after those early set backs with Tom Bush unlucky not to get the opening try when he broke 60 metres up field but was tackled five metres short of the line. The next break did bring a score however when Liam Hood spotted a retreating Salford defence and darted through to score. Pat Foulstone added the conversion to make it 12-6 after 23 minutes.
The game was a scrappy affair with both teams losing too much possession for either coach’s liking. The Rhinos finally got a period of continued pressure and eventually it brought the leveling score. Replacement prop Matty Syron went close before being held up over the line however the ball was moved quickly along the line and a brilliant offload from Jack Carvill put Callum Casey through to score. Foulstone was on target again to level the score after 37 minutes.
[uHALF-TIME[/u 12 - 12
The second half was another disjointed affair but eventually the Rhinos took control of the game with two tries in four minutes midway through the second half. The first was a brilliant solo effort by Carvill. He broke down the touchline just inside the Salford half and dummied back inside before sprinting down the touchline. He dummied again, catching Snyed out before barging his way over the last defender to score in the corner. Foulstone was off target with the touchline conversion but Leeds now led 16-12.
That lead was extended soon afterwards when a mix up between Eddie Vaughan and Adam Clay say the ball bounce from a high kick and Aston Wilson was fastest to react and he went through to score between the posts. Foulstone converted to make it 22-12.
With less than ten minutes to go Liam Hood made the game safe with his second try and Foulstone kicked his fourth goal from five attempts to make the final score 28-12.
Speaking after the game U20s coach Willie Poching praised the effort of his bench, who helped turn the game in favour of the Rhinos when they came on. He said, "We were looking down the barrel after ten minutes but we came up with a fantastic response. You could see how the players grew in confidence as the game went on and everything came our way after that.
"We practised a certain way we wanted to play the game and when we stuck to the game plan we started to get a foothold in the match. Once we got one positive thing going, that was followed by another and the whole thing snow balled from there.
"The bench were very good for us today. I thought Ben Parkinson and Matty Syron had their best game in blue and amber and Jack Carvill was outstanding. He is a young man who has missed a lot of rugby earlier this season but you could not tell that out there. He was really influential on how we turned the game around," added Poching.

| Good to see Drew Johnson make it into the 20s after playing his first couple of games in the 18s.
Hope he went OK?

Also it's good to see Dean McGilvray back in action.
Dean has not had the best of luck since he came to the Willows and who knows in the second half of this season he may get back into the first team.[/i
