no it isn't. it is fine if you want to play "referee" and watch the whole stadium at every play the ball, oh then they zoom in when the tackle is complete just in case you want to see any messing about.
Aussies have it nailed when it comes to showing the game.

The Aussie coverage was brilliant in the last set when as soon as the tackle was made it would show the crowd all looking the same each tackle instead of what was going on on the field.
Really wound me up that did!

You only have to look at the tacky and amateur graphics that plague the League coverage on Sky Sports, or the subpar college-standard promos and highlights packages that end every game, or the odious old men who commentate our game.
The production value of League on Sky Sports is and will remain embarrassing for Britain. It's distinctly 3rd-rate when compared with any of the big networks in Australia, and certainly America. I'd go as far as to say it's a problem with Sky Sports itself, rather than League. Through lack of competition they've been allowed to stagnate.

I agree. You wouldn't find anything like animated adverts for the next programme, a sponsored replay, highlights at the end of the programme, or old men commenting on the game on Fox or Channel 9. | | |

As far as adverts go, the difference is that the Australian networks obviously employ competent and talented video editors who use industry-leading software and up-to-date techniques. Meanwhile the adverts on Sky Sports, like everything else, are embarrassingly 90's. It's just dated.

Find me an intro to the game half as good as that NRL finals or Origin intro and I'll throw myself in front of a jeep.
I don't think anyone has qualms with sponsored replays, but show replays in between tackles or wait until a break in play if you have to. NRL coverage in Australia features usually well-placed replays that don't disrupt and cut into important play, SL coverage on Sky Sports regularly switches to replays as players are taking a hit up, or scoring tries, or doing something else.
2 cases in point that come to mind, because they're significant moments in recent years. Burgess for GB 2007, big hit on Fuifui, Sky cut to a replay while NZ run a try in. England - NZ in last years Four Nations, Issac Luke twists the leg of Rangi Chase, Sky cut to replay immediately, despite the fact there was some sort of fight going on that people would be interested to see, even if you don't like fighting.
They're both terrible examples of Sky Sports and their replay methods, which seems to be that a replay is shown immediately after a big hit or w/e else, regardless of whether someone is making an 80 metre break or having a fight. I can just imagine a big hit happening and some nutter immediately jumping up in a darkened room shouting "SHOW THE REPLAY, GO GO GO!!!!"
The highlights at the end of the programme have the same problem as the promos... They're crap and dated and naff. As an artist when I see the Australian promos and outro package I watch in awe and respect at the craftsmanship, when I see the equivalent on Sky Sports I think to myself "I could take their job with 2 years of study... they're lucky I don't want their jobs"
Your point about Aussie commentators being old men is fair, I don't like most Aussie commentators so you get a thumbs up from me for that, but I'd still say to my death that they're 10 times what Eddie and Stevo are.
Overall there's a wealth of difference in the editing, punditry and presentation as far as I'm concerned. That's underlined when you compare the chat shows of each respective code and network. |

In all fairness, I think that the commentary on State of Origin today was poor. I think it was really biased towards Queensland (in particular Billy Slater). The camera angles weren't too different to Sky, it's BBC that is bad for that. When somebody is taking a drive, you can sometimes hear the crowd shouting but they are too busy showing a random tackle from 5/10 minutes previously.

My biggest gripe at the moment with SKY is insisting on using their own pundits in the lead up to an origin game. The pre-match build up on 9 is brilliant, SKY could learn a thing or two about how to promote a big event from the 45 minutes before an origin.
Listening to SKY's talking heads leaves you extremely flat before the game
