A party had broken out in Las Vegas as all eyes of the rugby league world focussed on a jamboree of rugby with four games back-to-back including the first ever game of Super League to be played in the USA in its thirty year history. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
Wigan had been handicapped by eight points on the coupon, the bookies making the Champions the favourites for victory, but the main hope amongst those with rugby league in their hearts was that it would be a close game, packed with thrills and excitement, to tempt in the American audience. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
Three more games would follow throughout the night, but it was down to two of our own sides to get the event off to the best of starts. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
[SPLIT]
It was clear from the outset that this was going to be a game played at pace. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
Warrington had a try ruled out by the video referee on six minutes after Toby King stole the ball in a one-on-one tackle from Adam Keighran, the judgement was that the tackle had been completed. Two minutes later it was Wigan who were denied by the video official when a freeze frame analysis showed that Liam Marshall lost control of the ball after an apparent sensational touchdown in the left corner. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
On sixteen Wigan did get the lead when Marshall tapped back a high kick which was picked up by Tyler Dupree, and grounded from short range. Keighran added the conversion for a 6-0 lead. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
On twenty-two a flying Abbas Miski grounded the ball on the line with his whole body airborne over the touch line, Matt Dufty unable to prevent the grounding. Keighran had a difficult touchline conversion and smashed it between the uprights for 12-0.
Bevan French was on hand to complete a try which had been made by some determined work from Junior Nsemba, spinning out of a tackle and passing through a flick pass from Sam Walters, taken by the Wigan stand off. Keighran’s conversion pushed Wigan out to 18-0, the Warriors already close to sealing the win. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
Four minutes from half time and Wigan got their fourth try of the night, French feigning a kick before passing inside to Harry Smith with a simple walk in try, grounding under the sticks and giving Keighran his easiest kick of the night for 24-0, Wigan being blown away. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
Four minutes after the restart Marshall sprinted down the wing, avoiding the tacklers, before passing inside to the supporting Jai Field for a ten metre try. Keighran hit the mark again, impeccable with the boot. The game was over, Wigan devastating. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
It was Harlem Globetrotters stuff on fifty-one, Field jinking through the defence before flinging a wide pass to Jake Wardle to go in from twenty metres. Keighran added a sixth successful goal, a near perfect Wigan performance. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
Two minutes later French was the main provider for Luke Thompson to go in by the right upright, Warrington a spent force. Keighran hit the mark again, Wigan 42-0 ahead and putting on an exhibition. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
Warrington grabbed a consolation on sixty-five, Aaron Lindop chasing a George Williams grabber and grounding before the ball went dead in goal. Josh Thewlis added the conversion. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
It was back-to-back Wolves tries with James Harrison taking a flick back a metre from the line and stooping to score. class="Apple-converted-space"> Thewlis was again on target for 12-42.
Five minutes from time, Matt Dufty ducked under a desperate last ditch tackle to ground for the third Wolves try. Thewlis was on target and Warrington had some respectability at 18-42.
But Wigan weren’t finished, Liam Marshall scoring from the back of the scrum off a Smith pass. Keighran made it eight from eight with the boot. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
The final action of the game saw Matty Ashton score a length of the field try after he took an intercept on his own line off a French pass. Thewlis hit the target from the touchline, the kickers with one hundred percent records. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
With the eyes of the world watching, it wasn’t the best spectacle or advert for Super League with a totally dominant Wigan Warriors scoring at will against a lacklustre and second rate Warrington Wolves. Wigan won the game at a canter and left Wolves coach Burgess wishing he’d actually failed to get a visa to travel. If the single point loss to Leigh in the opening game was an early season ‘blip’, then they showed tonight that they were totally cured and more than ready to defend their crown. class="s1" style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 18.19px;">
