There’s less than a week to go until Rugby League’s biggest festival heads to Anfield and the City of Liverpool.
The 2019 Super League Dacia Magic Weekend will see all 12 of Super League’s teams descend on the city for the first ever Magic Weekend to be held in Liverpool.
The ‘Magic Weekend’ concept was organised in 2007, since then, it has been held annually at some of the biggest stadiums in the UK. Millennium Stadium in Cardiff was the first to host the event, after that; Murrayfield, Etihad Stadium, and most recently Newcastle United’s St James’ Park have hosted the event.
Former Everton CEO and now Super League CEO Robert Elstone said: “We’ve been in various cities around the UK, and it’s always been a big celebration for Super League. Whilst I think everyone in Super League has got fond memories of Newcastle, it probably was time for a change. We looked around and Liverpool embraced it. I knew first-hand what a great city this is, and undoubtedly Anfield is one of the best stadiums in the world.”
The weekend is a chance for Rugby League to celebrate all that is great about the sport and an experience for fans like no other. It’s not just all about the six games hosted over the two days, outside of the stadium, there will betwo fan zones packed with activities, music, food and drink.
Whilst inside the stadium, Capital FM Liverpool’s drive time DJ, Graeme Smith will perform throughout the day.
Staying inside the stadium, former Rugby League stars Robbie Hunter Paul and Eorl Crabtree will host the event, alongside presenter Will Perry, the trio will conduct stadium analysis, pre-game entertainment and player interviews.
Elstone added: “We’re extending out into Stanley Park, there’ll be some Learning Disability Rugby League and Physical Disability Rugby League, which is inspirational, so we’ll be showcasing two wonderful aspects of our sports.
“Inside the bowl we want to create a party atmosphere, the fundamental thing about Magic is giving the fans something to celebrate.”
Rugby League is unique, unlike football, fans are able to wander in and out of the stadium with a pass-out system in place, fans are not segregated, and alcoholic beverages can be consumed while watching the game in your seat.
