Did Peet play professionally? I'm not saying that should be a pre-requisite, just interested as it would be very unusual to have a top level coach who never played top level.

This will do absolutely nothing to bring crowds back and in my opinion will do exactly the opposite. The appointment of Peet as head coach will be seen as the cheap option by many and he’ll be up against it from day one. I feel for him if this rumour turns out to be true. He’ll either be blamed for everything that goes wrong or will be undermined and credit given to Waney if the club is successful. I fear, Matty Peet is in a no win situation.

No. I’m not sure he even went as far as semi pro. I played as a kid with him at Hindley and seem to recall him being at Pats in the open age team years later.

We’ve seen in football some of the best managers being guys who didn’t have much of a playing career, so I’m not sure it’s a necessity but we’ll see.

He is going to be on a hiding to nothing early doors if he does take over.

I understand we don't know that this is actually happening yet and I don't want to put Matty Peet down before he's had a chance to prove himself but, if true, don't we need fresh ideas coming into the club not just a continuation of the same?

Absolutely we do. I’d have been happy with a Madge, Holbrook assistant type coach coming in. I’d have been content with Danny Ward coming in… I’ll be hugely disappointed if Peet is given the job.

To be honest that could be a positive. He's clearly got in through talent rather than knowing the right people due to his playing career. Have there been any other SL coaches who weren't professional players?

We absolutely do not need a promotion from within the club at this time. If ever there was a time for a fresh start to move the club on it’s now.

Woolf never played I don't think and Michael Maguire and Steve Price had very short careers.

I think there’s a fair argument to say Peet has done his apprenticeship and deserves his chance. I agree with the notion that we need some fresh ideas and would hope we can bring in an assistant to tick that box.

In reality, what do we know. Peet could have plenty of fresh ideas but they weren’t consistent with the ideas of the coach he was working under.

He’s been around the club since 2008 so will have had experience under a number of head coaches, he’s spent time at Sale Sharks and with the England academy set up so also has external influences.

I just hope as a sport we can have a stable season and as a club remain relatively healthy.

Correct. There’s nothing to say Peet wouldn’t have all sorts of things he’d like to change. It’s unlikely but an inside man won’t automatically keep everything ticking along as it always has done, especially if he like us can see things haven’t been going well.

More than prepared to give him a chance before writing him off.
