Was just browsing a well known video clips site. if you type in "nathan wood football highlights" you will find a 25 minute video posted by the man himself. Nice interviews at the end as well with players from the 2005 season

Apologies if this has been posted before

How terribly modest of the man, can't say I'm suprised.

Interesting to hear Paul Cullen on the commentary last week saying how hard it was to replace Nathan Wood, he compared it to Lee Briers retiring.

Those are great highlights, I enjoyed watching that!

Cullen used to talk about how much Wood's retirement had affected us a lot. I think it was a watershed in the Cullen era. Before then we were still an inconsistent team but there was generally a more positive attitude about the club, after he had gone the final two and a half years of Cullen's time felt more frustrating and surrounded by negativity. We signed big name players in those years but a lot seemed to be treading water and the team spirit didn't seem what it was when Wood was there.

From what I remember there were two schools of thought from our fans on Wood, some thought he was a cult hero others thought he was a bit overrated because he was a limited player, he wasn't a complete halfback with a kicking or organising game. But one thing Wood did that was great was he would step up right when we needed something and take charge himself, he was mainly a running halfback who would take people on and could beat them even though he wasn't express quick, he had very good footwork and was strong. He was great in a tight game because he would come up and score or break the line to set something up and then the other players would follow him, he could create momentum and belief for the rest of the team. This is what I feel is missing from Myler at the moment, he isn't going to be a Briers type all round halfback but neither was Nat Wood...Myler is faster than Wood was and would be a great player if he had Wood's mentality.

I would put Nat Wood around on a par with Greg Mackey for Wire halfbacks, they were both similar in terms of being very tough and would perform when it was needed but also they could get the other players playing better too. We had the same problem when Mackey retired 10 years earlier, the team lost some of its edge.

I also think Wood could get taken for granted because that was an era of big name Aussie signings, there were guys like Adrian Lam and Jamie Lyon around, but if Wood was playing today he would be the best halfback in Super League....seriously. He was better than Chase, Brough or Green.

I liked Nat Wood but no way was he as good as Greg Mackey.
Greg Mackey on his first spell, the instant difference he made to our team, the likes I've only ever seen Andy Gregory before him (too young to had seen Bobby Fulton but heard the stories) and Jonathan Davis and Andrew Johns and do since.

This club has dropped some clangers in its time, but not tying up Mackey in a contract has to be right up there with the biggest ever.
Higham is such a nice fellow and Wire through and through, but what he was thinking I'll never know.

When we did finally sign him to a contract, he just wasn't quite the same for some reason??
I guess that could be why he has been given the similar to Nat Wood tag??

I remember Mackey having a better all-round game than Wood but Wood was such a great character on and off the field he was instrumental in taking the team from relegation candidates to play-off contenders. And he recommended we sign Benny Westwood.

Agreed about character.

Roland Phillips being another.

Paul Ford and Paul Cullen were charismatic too.

I liked Greg Mackey and as above, in his first but brief stint he was awesome and certainly softened the blow of losing Gregory. His second stint I was never really blown away by him. He was a good organiser tackled above his weight and wasn't afraid of taking the line on when he had no runners, but he lacked the power and pace that Nat wood had.

If I had to have one in today's team it would be a tough call. we certainly need an organiser like Mackey, but we are in dire need of a leader a character and someone who can score a try out of nothing and that's Nat wood.
