So do I. We both climbed the stairs to a function room in a pub together, only he went up normally and I had my crutches, working out how to get up the stairs, eventually doing it crawling, on my hands with Mr HWS having to support me. And yet he still lays claim that people like me don't deserve any benefit and I should do something deserving for it and I more or less should accept my lot in life. Thats what he says on here anyway. He was quite nice to my face and understanding at the "do" we went to.

I'm not saying that the lack of tone of voice is the only source of misinterpretation, indeed, to clarify, I think it's just one of many possibles. I agree that some words (such as workshy) have the same impact regardless of tone of voice and are very plain indeed.
It seems to me that you are one who chooses his language with care. Not all do that, and some just aren't able to.

True but one of the best places for learning how to do that has been for me forums such as this. I am not saying everyone may even want to do that never mind should but wittering away on here and other places hasn't done me any harm as far as use of English goes.

I can answer that. The picture is of "Gentleman" Johnny Whiteley M.B.E who played for Hull FC from 1950-1970. He was also coach of the famous 1970 GB team who was the last team to win the Ashes. He also has a suite named after him with his pictures in it at the KC Stadium
Assem Allam and his son who own Hull City FC and the Stadium Management Company have decided this week to take down all the pictures of Johnny Whiteley in the JW Suite at the KC because Hull FC have refused to pay his invoice for "wall space" that has never been implimented (or agreed to) before this week.

At my very first Job Centre interview, I took my CV along and asked about any help they could provide with stationery, postal costs, access to trade magazines etc. I was gobsmacked when I was told that I would have to wait 26 weeks before being elligible to use the Job Club. IDS spoke of the thousands of youngsters who came upto him, the length and breadth of the country, begging to work for next to nothing just to gain some work experience. Must be true, he said it on the AMS this morning.
I hope his government are busy creating the thousands of real jobs ready to facilitate these experienced workers once they've finished their incredibly sought after Workfare placements.

There are a couple of things in that reported conversation that IDS had that concern me...
1. His assertion that JSA and other benefits can only be "earned" by being forced to labour in a job not of your choosing, forced labout by any other definition, totally ignoring the fact that most benefits paid to the unemployed come under the banner of "contribution" benefits (like JSA for instance), benefits which you are ENTITLED to request after you have paid NIS contributions - we'll also ignore the fact that he carefully avoids using the word "wage" when refering to the forced labour priciple and therefore side-steps the illegality of paying someone half the legal minimum wage.
2. His assertion that 50% of those on the workfare program do not draw benefits after they have completed the course - I'd like to know what happens to them because I have not seen any statistics that suggests that 50% of those on the program find employment at the end of it, indeed the figure I have seen have been in single percentage digits - so where do 50% of workfare claimants go after completion, why do they not claim the benefits that they were claiming before and during the program, who or what stops their benefits at the end of the six week program - we deserve to be given an explanation from IDS, its either true in which case why, or its complete bollax in which case why.
