There maybe proof (or sufficient circumstantial evidence) that a prophet existed around the time, certainly no proof that he was the son of god.

Could that not have been a lie by others needing a focal point for a new religion?

It could, I'm more inclined to believe that there was some one around at this time who was a popular prophet similar to Mohamed , built up a following and did some decent things, the rest seems to have been blown out of all proportion by those who needed something to believe in. I've read somewhere that there's not a single reference to Jesus in any historical text prior to the 2nd Century. If I get chance later, I'll try to dig out the actual quote.
