I currently have some CF versions and I'm pretty impressed with them.

A question inspired by the link Standee posted.

Would you rather have 1 32gb card or 3 or 4 smaller ones?

A mix, I have 8gb ones in my SLR, but use larger ones in my HD video camera.

My old Fuji takes Xd cards, which are now hard to get and expensive.

Tripod
Auto shutter release
Shoot in manual, Bulb, f8 and ISO 100
Location - fireworks are released from North Pier so planning on standing on the lower prom beyond North Pier, shooting across the beach/sea dependant on the tide.

I shall be using my kit lens (I have 55-250 and nifty fifty too, but kit lens was suggested as best) and I shall be shooting from the lower promenade beyond North Pier.

A couple of other things were suggested:

1. setting focus to manual and infinity - don't think I can do this with my kit lens can I?
2. White Balance - down to personal taste apparently, daylight giving a warmer glow and tungsten a cooler one.
3. Shooting in RAW - can someone tell me the benefits to this please. Do I need to convert the images in some way, do I need specific software? I normally only use Picasa to edit my photos.

Anything else anyone can think of greatly appreciated

Personally, I'd take the widest lens I had (depending on how far I can get from the fireworks). I've done a lot of firework photography (I go to the Southport Championships each year amongst other things) and whilst I've got a lot of technically good fireworks shots they can start being very samey if you can't get enough into the frame - with a fireworks photo taken in Southport looking no different to one taken in my local park or one taken in Vancouver. I like to go wide and include some context, be it a silhouette of crowds or Blackpool Tower or something. Some of the best fireworks photos I have are from the bay at Swanage, where I managed to get a good distance away and got plenty of water reflections and the buildings around the bay lit with the glow of the fireworks.

I have 1 64GB, 2 x 32GB, 2 x 16 GB, mainly becaise I "lost" a bag with my SD cards and a load of Go Pro accessories in it, replaced the lot and then found the bag which had been "tidied" away, in our house the verb "tidy" means "Put it where he'll never think to look"

Thanks very much Iain, as the fireworks are being launched from North Pier I'm going to try and get further down the prom so will have a good distance between me and the fireworks. I've seen alot taken from Central Pier but i'm thinking that will be pretty packed and don't think the beach will be an option due to tide times, but will have the pier itself and the showbar at the end.

Speaking of cards, I have a 4gb card that is empty, but my camera shows it as being full and another that is full (I can put the pics on my Mac in Finder), but shows 'no images' in my camera. Anyone had this before.

Yup, generally symptoms of duff cards, many fakes show as empty but you can't store anything on them.
