What made me laugh is he got a photo took just after it happened in the ambulance and now he's providing us with pics on his recovery, good on the kid for getting on with it and hope he gets well soon.

He made a good point on his Twitter page saying he had well over 300 get well soon messeges from all fans from different clubs, just goes to sure that rugby league has the best fans EVER in the world...FACT!

Shoulder charges are never fully controlled but they are part of the game. They are illegal or not and right now they are legal and most fans around the world like to see them.

TBF most fans around the world like to see the rugby. If you wanna see that sort of thing go watch WWE. How would you have felt had there been even more damage to Burgess. The game is brutal enough as it is without this sort of thing. There was no attempt to tackle Burgess and i disagree shoulder charges can be controlled. This one wasn't.

I agree with you, I'm a Leeds fan and have no problem with Walkers hit as it was legal and the injury was purely accidental but shoulder challenges require zero skill and do not add to the game.

Most big hits comes from someone putting a shoulder in, tyring to take that out of the game would prove very difficult. Like Barrie Mac said you could see 100 of those hits and only one might result in an injury. Big hits and brutality are part of our game, it's why people love it so much. No one likes to see injuries but they are part and parcel of RL.

Lets be fair , whilst i feel very sorry for the lad jaw damage is a weekly injury in rugby all over the world and the lad has handled himself very well throughout what must be a very painful time for him, with regards the hit itself, it was neither dangerous or illegal as it was the head that hit the jaw in a cracking shoulder charge!!exactly the sort of shoulder charge that many FC players have done many times all season, its part of the game and is exciting to see when they come off and sickening when they end like this one to burgess however damage of that magnatude is rare thankfully, no attempt should be made to change the tackling laws as they are just right as they are , its a big boys game not conkers

Got to agree with that.....the crowd at the KC and all the other grounds love it when the shoulder charges work...no one wants to see any player injured but it is a part & parcel of the game.

As has been said, shoulder charges are great to watch from a fans POV, but to me there's nothing better than a player crumpling an opponent by hitting the mid-riff with his shoulder. In the limited time I played it was a far more effectve way in bringing a player down/stopping the play & far more predictable in terms of injury outcome. With a shoulder charge players can just bounce off, make more ground & still easily offload, with a textbook tackle forward momentum is stopped and it is difficult to offload safely, you also dominate the tackle as the oppo is invariably on their back.

A perfect example of this is on that popular video website under 'big hits' at 1:45 where the England RU tighthead prop nails his French opposition.

Not always, only realised it had changed when O'Driscoll got done for the Lions in SA last year.

You now have to lift your arms in an attempt to tackle or you're gone.

Isn't a contrecoup injury just one that occured on the opposite side to the impact/where he was hit? (this may still be true, as I haven't seen footage of the Burgess hit).





Edit: Just been looking it up, and from what I could tell, contrecoup only refers to brain injuries (a brain injury at the opposite side to the impact). However, I don't know myself, your d-i-l will probably know more about it than me, by the sounds of it.
