LEE Briers will not be fit to return for Warrington Wolves’ fourth round Challenge Cup fixture against Keighley Cougars on Sunday.
Wolves were hopeful the 34-year-old stand-off would ease back into first team duty against the Championship club at Cougar Park, but head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith has revealed that the veteran may have tried a little too hard to return from neck and shoulder injury in time for the weekend's cup action.
“Lee won’t make it for this week,” he said.
“He has picked up a little bit of a calf strain as a result of trying to get himself back and healthy in a short period of time.
“He has just strained it a little bit today and he is not quite right, so he will be another week or so.
“We were hoping that he would make it for this game, but it is very unlikely.”
Gareth O’Brien, who helped steer partner club Swinton Lions to a 44-40 victory against Hunslet Hawks at the weekend, is expected to fill the gap left by the Wolves stalwart
