If Bobby Zamora can w*nk all over our defence, then Messi would have no problems ATM.

| Seeing Carvalho fit & on the bench just seemed bizarre. Folk who seem to be taking solace from the Terry ban, should remember that Chelsea do have him as a direct replacement.
I think the tie is still alive, just. Difficulty for Liverpool will be how much they attack in the second leg, and knowing that there's danger of getting broken at the other end, Chelsea looked particularly dangerous on the break last night.
I thought Kalou & Malouda, two much maligned players were very good last night, and it was as close to the 'Mourinho Drogba' that I've seen. Easily Chelsea' best performance since the Special One left.

You reckon. Must have been a great game for the neutrals, as a Liverpool fan it was torture being at the game when we were completely outplayed by Chelsea.
I suppose you would rather watch Numancia v Valladolid or something. Don't get me wrong I'm a big a fan of the La Liga as anyone, but you seem to have it in for English football.

Why are these people at Anfield, they obviously don't have a clue. What next, half and half Liverpool - Man United scarves. Hands across the East Lancs.

| Quote keithcun="keithcun"Really disappointing last night. Fair play to Chelsea, they did a number on us last. The best I've seen them play by far all season and I don't think it's a coincidence that Essien is back playing. A much better team than we beat home and away in the league.
Essien shackled Gerrard out of the game, and even at half time they could, or probably should have gone in with a 1 or 2 goal advantage as Drogba missed 2 chances you'd expect him to score. Saying that, I don't think Liverpool played badly in the first half, and contrary to popular opinion beforehand it was a pretty good game.
Even in the second half we started OK, but as soon as Chelsea scored the second we went to pot, and until the last couple of minutes Cech was unworked. Pretty uninspiring performance. Thought Aurelio had a shocker, couldn't seem to do anything right. As for Lucas, don't think he did too badly at all considering the stick he gets.
Lots to do, never say never but it's more than an uphill task at Chelsea. I can't see us winning 3-0 or 3-1, but there again, I couldn't see us beating Madrid or Man U by the scores we did. Hope lives eternal.
The important thing now is to get a result on Sat and worry about Tuesday when it comes. Knowing our luck, we'll get knocked out on Tues and Man U will get knocked out the following night, I think we need Man U to play as many games as possible till the end of the season.'"
You've saved me time typing out the same thing. The only thing I would add is that I was really disappointed in Riera and Kuyt to a lesser extent. Poor retention and no real cutting edge.
If we win on Sat, I'd send the reserves down on Tuesday. With Chelsea in that form, we don't stand a chance. I'd love to be proven wrong but I can't see it. Essien was unreal and is surely the best DM in the world. He is a freak. Breaking play up all night and then still being in position to get involved in forward raids.
I'm positive, and if I could be ar$ed looking I would, that a Chelsea fan on here stated earlier this season that Mikel had moved ahead of Essien in the pecking order.

| So to Hamburg vs Citeh in the UEFA Cup (for Newcastle posters that used to be the Fairs Cup 40 years ago.). Hughes can't be confident, as Citeh have a worse away record than the US Army. That's not quite true, Citeh have won 1 in 19 away.
The result may swing on how cold it is in Hamburg, and whether gloves will be required by key players. It will probably be a damage limitation exercise, and hope to put 7 past them at Eastlands.

You could tell as soon as he had done it, it was a ligament injury, from the way the knee moved.
It was absolute madness sending him back on.

While last night was a massive success for Essien, it has to be countered by the defeat against Tottenham. Essien played in that game and he was garbage.
I'd still have Mikel in the defensive midfield role. IMO he's still much more suited to that role than Essien is and Essien would play in central midfield. Last nights game he was given the specific role of keeping Gerrard out of the game and he did it well, but we aren't playing Gerrard every week and Essien is better suited further up the field.

I'd rather Essien than Ballack playing in that 'middle of the park' role.
Lampard plays a little further forward, Mikel a little deeper and Essien the engine room with his typical box-to-box style.
