For my money James Child and, sometimes (but increasingly less so), Thierry Alibert are the only referees I would describe as "inept". It's true that all the refs make a fair a number of mistakes but in a game like rugby league, where they are asked to adjudicate a play the ball while stood ten metres away from it and keep the defending side onside as well, not to mention keep up with play in what is probably the most demanding of all team sports from a cardio-vascular standpoint then I fail to see how they can be expected to get everything right. Frankly, looking back at my old DVDs from the 80s and 90s I feel that the standard of refereeing has been improved over the years despite the fact that the ref has been moved 5 metres further away from the play the ball. The only real problem I have is the infuriating lack of consistency with regards to discipline and the (genuinely) inept performance of the referees' boss, Stewart Cummings. Things were better when Greg McCallum was in charge and I really would have liked to see Russell Smith in the job that Cummings now has.
