I don't think he wanted to throw Dixon into the mix until the game was in the bag. Think it is pretty clear he was dropped last week, the previous games he was poor so I reckon his confidence was shot.
Starting off the bench was the best thing for him, see how the game goes then throw him in. It seemed to work, his first touch was from a high ball and he made 40mtrs and no obvious mistakes. For me I would start him from the bench again next week, and if he goes ok put him the starting line up against toronto
