I think he's publicising it to steer some of the flak away from him, by making it a more 'public' issue. He says he has turned down a number of media interviews, to avoid it becoming a one man

It could well be that apart from anything else Degsy's comments were designed to take a bit of pressure off the coaching staff and the players.
