| Mid season when we're winning games it seems a great idea to tie up the whole squad on long term contracts, fans will say 'great management from the club' and so on, but what happens if it comes to the end of the season and we have lost in the playoffs or lost the GF again. There will be lots of analysis on here saying, we bottled it, AGAIN, we need leaders, need an new [insert position X, Y and Z but we'll be stuck with the same faces because we'll have filled up the salary cap.
When Ferguson was at United he used to watch players' attitudes like a hawk and even when they were winning year after year, when players' intensity started to slip and they were no longer as hungry as they were, they got moved on. Whilst our squad has done well, I think there are a lot of players there where the jury is still out as to whether they can really be relied on when it counts. When everyone gets nice long contract renewals it can create a comfort zone mentality. Playing for Wire is a nice fun job, enough talent around you to make sure you'll win more than you lose, everyone has good banter on social media, get to the end of the season and maybe you lose in the playoffs, no worry, just post 'disappointed to lose today, we'll be back next year, #comeontheWolves'.
I have no problem with tying up Daryl Clark on a long term deal but some of the others would be worth watching and observing how they play in crunch games before putting long extensions on the table.
