Is it not worth taking the photo to somewhere like Jessops and see if they can do a scan and use photoshop or some other software to "repair" the image.

That is something we have thought about but over the years it has become water damaged and parts of the picture missing. Chances are I wont be able to find it, if not I will give that a try
