Surely the correct information to draw from that quote would be that Barker has said privately that his editor can make mistakes!

No, the point being Barker confirmed he has no control over his stories once they're issued to the editors. If there is a mistake in the published article, then more than likely is an editorial error and all complaints should be directed to the necessary editor.
