I think by not accepting a bet for charity, regardless of any previous good charity work that you have done, you are seen as running away.

If you were so certain about your own views you'd jump at the chance to be proven right. Listing your supposed charity work as some kind of sideways shuffle around the subject doesn't make you look any better. It's not if someone disagrees with you, it's that in this case they made a fair offer to see whose outcome would happen first. You'd get a little more respect by just being honest and backtracking your statement or taking the bet.
