I've never understood why Saints and Wigan, Bradford and Leeds claim to be derby fixtures, the clue is the title of the fixture.



Anyway, fantasic atmosphere yesterday... 16,000 is a brilliant crowd for a friendly.

Just for the record dally, Crookes' first game for Rervers was at mil magic in Cardiff....that game was in the September...and less said about that match the better!!!!



For the record NO rugby league game gets near the Hull derby for passion!

i would also like to make a vague and unprovable statement in support of some clubs and a sly dig at others. It is important others disagree on here for some reason



though I would like to ask what part of the name 'local derby' indicates it needs to be in the same City? surely just, well, local should do?

i also sat in the main grandstand at knowlsey rd for saints vs quins, right on the halfway line



the view was spoiled by the post running in front of my seat



at least i got to know what watching RL in northern union times felt like

hey leeds vs hunslet is the same city

hearing "old faithfull" being sung by everyone in the pub beforehand



then hearing the bay at one end of rovers fans singing "stayin up"



and after the game everyone walked from the ground side by side



being sat next to a crazy FC fan going off at paul cooke



watching paul cooke kick a goal from the sideline after the crowd were giving him heaqs and him staring down our whole bay full of FC fans when he got the kick

Just for the record... Cookie's first game for Rovers was against Huddersfield





However, his 2nd game was against Hull (at Cardiff)

It's obviously between Wigan v Saints and Hull FC v Hull KR.



The Hull derby is good and popular, but the Wigan/Saints derby has been played at the top level for a long period of time and still serves up top crowds. Part of the Hull derby's novelty will eventually wear off with some fans after both clubs have played at the top level for a long period of time.



Only then can the derbies be compared IMO.

Taking nothing away from that crowd for a friendly - absolutely terrific attendance, well done to both clubs.

Think it is, due to segragation and unreserved tickets, they can never get the full capcity at the KC against Rovers, think at least 2 of the derbies at the KC have sold, the first sold out it days, think it could have been over 30K if the ground was big enough.



Whats the point in this thread anyway as you have said as RL fans we should be pleased with this crowd, I would love every game in RL to be sold out, the more people that watch out great game the better.

Comparing derby games is pointless, every fans derby game is the best in their eyes and that’s how it should be.

Was that the one when HKR thrashed Hull & the scoreboard went on the blink for some reason? I remember that game - it was a superb display of rugby from HKR & a great way for them to confirm their SL status. But if I remember right the poignancy of the Cooke factor was that it was his first game back at the KC Stadium after signing for Rovers rather than his first game (or derby) for HKR.

What's all this long period of time business, you obviously aren't old enough to remember when Fc and Rovers were the top two teams in the league and, I may add, when they were both in a lower league they were attracting crowds at least the size or even bigger than a large percentage of super league clubs.......... so there ! lol

Weren't they also runners-up for the Clive Sullivan Trophy ?

Clearly no one has been to a Salford-Warrington "derby" at the Willows then? Quite clearly the top rivalry in RL. Class ground, top footy, and a huge gathering of people watching.. dog turd in the back alleys, onions in your hot chocolate.. What more could you ask for on a good Friday?



I cant wait for this year's trip... I've heard they are bringing back the old tannoy system which simulates crowd cheering.

just for your info, there was actually a game called rugby league before the superleague era. hull and rovers played in one or two of those games

12500 for a derby game in league one (or whatever it was called then) in 1997

Like Wigan's glory days, the majority of current support will not have been present during those pre-Super League days. Especially considering Hull FC and Hull KR's problems/abscence during the earlier Super League years.



Supporters in their twenties and below are only now appreciating the derby being regulary played at the top level. They aren't used to the derby and it's still new to them, where as Wiganers and St Helensers have spent the last twenty/thirty years watching our derby year after year at the top level in League, cup and Super League finals.



It would be interesting to see if the Hull derby was still as popular amongst Hull folk, part-timers and non-die hards had they been playing against each other for as consistantly long at the top level as Wigan and St Helens have.

You clearly know nothing about the history of the game in Hull. I've been there for over 30 years my family 50 to 70 themselves. Its the biggest fixture in Hull regardless of the division we play in. A pre season friendly a few years back attracted over 12000 when Rovers were in the NL. The Hull publics dersire for a derby is as great today as it ever has been, and whats more there is another 100 years + of rivalry and desire in the city and surround.

I could get on my soap box and praise the Wigan-Saints derby to the same degree.



But after 30 years of consistantly playing each other upto 4 or 5 times a year in big games, the derby isn't as important to some supporters who are less die-hard than others. Eventually, due to the size of the sport, this will happen to the Hull derby too.
