So Sheffield will always be a football city, but they can have a fairly big ice hockey team too?



If they can get decent crowds to a sport like ice hockey, I think there is definitely some potential for the Eagles. It's just a shame there isn't a 14k stadium around and no-one to even share one with (unless Sheffield FC get any good!) rather than a huge 25k stadium with mostly uncovered stands and a running track.

There is, but folk would rather eat their first born than share.

It may have to be if South Yorkshire wants a SL franchise at some point. Very thorny issue and not the one that fans from either club want to debate or even have take place in all honesty. Sometimes though fans concerns are second to the finance of it all.

Wigan and Hull both have premiership football clubs? They seem to manage ok having an RL team as well

Why would it? I'm pretty sure that Don Valley is a premier standard stadium that holds over 12k. Sure, it's not that great because it's got a track around it and not covered in places, but it's definitely up to scratch.



If Sheffield merged with Doncaster and played in Doncaster, it's pretty much still just Doncaster. Sheffield's best bet is to go it alone. Same with Doncaster. There's 23 miles between the two places.

For both these places rugby league was established long before the soccer clubs had any success. Wigan Athletic have only been a league team just over thirty years and Hull City only managed to get into the top division last year. Trying to establish a rugby team in a city already dominated by soccer is a totally different matter.

Oh how wise you are oh pricipled one! A team full of English talent, with English internationals and a reserve grade team full of English talent, both sitting 5th in their leagues with a game in hand.......but I forgot, attendance figures are EVERYTHING to a club with SFA youth set up and a ground that makes Belle View look state of the art

Even though i am sure that this thread was probably started out of Widnesian bitterness. It does not change the fact that there was a lot of spirit in the Doncaster performance on Thursday and Sheffield do seem to be getting more established and stronger as a club.



Hopefully Rugby League can continue to grow in South Yorkshire.
