I know it is an emotive subject, but if government does not approve construction of two separate stadia, perhaps the clubs should consider sharing one new stadium? In Australia, ground sharing has occurred extensively in Rugby League and especially Aussie Rules Football.
Consider the:
* Sydney Football Stadium - currently two teams, the Sydney (formerly Eastern Suburbs) Roosters and Wests Tigers, use it as a home ground. South Sydney and St George Illawarra have used it as a home ground in the past. Rugby Union's NSW Waratahs and Soccer's Sydney FC also use it as a home ground.
* Stadium Australia (ANZ Stadium) at Homebush - currently Canterbury Bulldogs and South Sydney use it as a home ground, and Wests Tigers did use it before. The NSW Waratahs RU and Sydney Swans AFL teams have both played home games there.
In AFL
* Melbourne Cricket Ground - 4 clubs use it as a home ground, Collingwood Magpies, Hawthorn Hawks, Melbourne Demons and Richmond Tigers. Carlton Blues also play there.
* Docklands (Etihad) Stadium (from wiki) - Western Bulldogs, Carlton Blues, Essendon Bombers, St Kilda Saints and North Melbourne Kangaroos use the stadium as their primary home ground. The Collingwood Magpies and Richmond Tigers, also play home games there, but their official home ground is the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Geelong Cats also use it for some home games, but their official home ground is Skilled Stadium in Geelong.
Consider that it is a 18km drive from Redfern Oval, the heart of Souths territory, to ANZ Stadium. There was a very emotional debate about the future of Redfern Oval, and South Sydney fans are passionate about their history and tradition, but the club realised it had to find a new home to survive.
