It has in 2005 when St Helens lost consecutive home play off games to Leeds and Bradford.



There is a new format this year though and unlike all the previous series there is no guaranteed 1 V 2 fixture where one or the other automatically qualifies for the GF.



That must make the possibility of either 1 or 2 missing out altogether that bit greater.

That's why they changed it.

I hope it continues to be 1st V 2nd as often as possible in the GF (regardless of the play off format adopted) as that is what gives the regular round competition it's credibility.

What if Leeds finish 3rd?

Leeds were the better team during the majority of the regular season only not when it mattered the most.







They should have their work cut out from there, same as any other team finishing in that position.



Teams finishing 1 and 2 have earned the right to have the easier passage to the GF and ideally that would be the final most seasons. Finishing 1/2 keeps the regular round comp relevant as does finishing 3/4 being next best, 5/6 next best and 7/8 the toughest route.
