Rather than begging for followers on a public forum, why not talk about Rugby League and use the #rugbyleague hashtag? Then if people following that hashtag find you interesting, they might follow you too.

first of all i dont know what a hashtag is, and 2nd of all begging for followers seems to have worked so far, quite a few are now following. i will continue to use this method and see what happens but thanks for your input.

It's a great way of talking to like-minded people and a very natural way to increase your follower numbers, and less effort than spamming public forums.
