Quote peggy="peggy"Could any of you suggest a decent compact digital camera, not looking for anything too clever. Currently considering a SONY Cyber-shot DSC-WX80 camera. Looking to pay up to £150.
I have had Canon cameras since I was a kid but the compact versions don't seem to have as high a value on megapixels.
Thanks'"
I wouldn't bother about megapixels too much, lenses and sensor are often what limit resolution more these days.
I have this Canon S100 which I use instead of my SLR, especially when hiking or any other time when I don't want to take a bagful of gear.
www.kenrockwell.com/canon/s100.htm
It may have "only" 12.1 Mp ... but it has a CMOS sensor and the resolution is marvellous.

| Thanks to you both for the replies, I'm also considering the Canon power shot SX260. Lower pixels but good sensor and 20x optical zoom extending to 39x. For the money it seems to be good value and sufficient for what I need.

I love the "Old Gold" image, so much detail. Wonder if the colours in the ads are accurate. Thanks for pointing these out, kinda what I've been into for a few years. Did some for Neil Fox's bio but the final colour repo wasn't quite up to scratch.

I am intrigued that these two totally different examples are approximately 20 yards away from eachother …

| Anyone got a clue what this is?
I thought it was a Turnstone but the black head threw me a bit, it has orange legs too if you can't see them.

Winter migrants are arriving. Saw alot in Devon. Locally in Herts we're getting migrants passing through, as we are nationally.
The dark head you mentioned is part of the winter plumage.

| Not sure if everyone will be able to see this but have a click anyway...
[urlhttps://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10201400753673609&set=gm.478011682297274&type=1&theater[/url
Its a Facebook account for a person who collects old images of Leeds and as you can see from reading his text he has recently been handed a sequence of aerial photographs that were taken by the RAF from nose-mounted cameras on Canberra aircraft in 1951 during a project to photograph the whole of Britain in celebration of the Queens Coronation of that year.
The more you explore those photos (and he is posting more in weeks to come) the more amazed you'll be at the very fine detail, but despite their historical importance ONLY the photos of Leeds and Bradford survive, the rest of the country's images having been destroyed as "unwanted" when the RAF declassified them and couldn't find an institute who wanted them.

Can't wait to go back. We're going to try to return very soon when the Autumn colours are even more advanced.

| I have asked this before, but have slept since then and don't fancy trawling back thru 69 pages.
I'm looking at getting a prime lens, primarily for shooting in low light/night photography. What focal length is best to go for, 35 or 50mm, and is about £120-140 enough to pay for a lens like that?
It's for a Nikon D5000 btw.

Plenty of bargain 50mm f1.8 lenses around mate, usually quite cheap

On film SLR cameras, a 50mm lens was considered to be about the same angle of vision as the eye would normally see, a 28mm was considered "wide angle" etc etc.
On digital cameras though, the ratio is 1 : 1.6, so a 35mm lens for digital would be nearer to the normal "eye" angle of vision.
For low-light use, you need to think more about aperture size, i.e. the lower the f-number of the lens, the wider its maximum aperture (to let more light in).
You can get a Nikon 35mm f1.8 for the money you're talking about.
Any bigger aperture and you are then paying a lot more ... or looking at other lens manufacturers.
