Washington - all of the Mall, Arlington

Bit macbre but in DC I really enjoyed Arlington Cemetery. You could literally spend at least a whole afternoon in there. We witnessed the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier too. Totally sureal.

second holiday might not be happening now, for some reason two of the group (of four of us) have went cold on the idea, even though they've booked time off work and can comfortably afford it seeing as though they still live at their parents and have no other trips planned.

I've had that problem a couple of times. Really annoying.

A return to Austria is all sorted, we went there last year to the Tyrol and fell in love with it. We are going a bit further over this year to Saltzburg so Mr P can indulge her Sound of Music phobia, Vienna for a touch of Mozart and Berchesgarten for me to visit my old mate Adolf's old hide away.



I better not mention the chocolate cakes smothered in cream .............

Paris was expensive when I first went in 1981. You want to try Stockholm, Rekjavik and Helsinki, it will make your cry if you have to buy a round.

Unlike you I don't need to avail myself of such services - I am surprised you would reveal this to this particular audience

£6.50 was the cheapest beer I found when I went there to watch England in November!

Actually, I am gobsmacked at that price, we paid £3 a pint in 1979 on a navy visit, ironically England also played Sweden during that visit and we got free tickets, it was a 0-o draw, but we had beers with the players and gave them an invite to the ship. Dave Watson (Man City not Everton ), Ray Clemence and a couple of other turned up.

We're off to Collioure again in August. I'm setting myself a crazy agenda: blogging in the morning before going out (I'm always up first), Thomas Mann's [iMagic Mountain[/i on the beach and then a serious onslaught on writing a book in the evenings, over a glass of wine, on the terrace overlooking the sea.



Can hardly wait.

Has anyone been to the "old town" of Faro, Portugal ?



I have to say on Google Earth I'm not over-impressed, is it worth a morning or an all day visit ?



I'm particularly interested in architecture and authentic "oldness".

I've just returned from completing the West Highland Way with my 14 year daughter and brother in law. We were really lucky in that we only had any serious rain on the second day of the Loch Lomond stretch and even that cleared up shortly after we had passed Inversnaid. The highlights were, the evening spent in the lounge of the Kingshouse hotel gazing out at Buachaille Etive Mor and the following morning's hike in superb weather. From the top of the Devil's staircase we were rewared with fantastic views of Glen Coe and in the other direction we could see all the way to the cloud free summit of Ben Nevis.

I'd guess that's a "no" then!



I've got a week in Lisbon, Portugal in July, which looks to have some nice old stuff.
