If there wasn’t already enough pressure on Hull KR to win the Hull derby, the home side had the added stress of needing a win to lift themselves off the bottom of the Super League table, and grab themselves a lifeline in a very competitive bottom of the table.
With Hull FC’s Albert Kelly missing through injury, Lee Radford moved Jake Connor to stand off. Hull KR gave a debut to midweek signing Matt Parcell at hooker as they looked to overcome the disappointment of last weeks loss in London.
This is the third meeting of the season with honours shared so far. KR had a narrow two point win back in February but at their most recent meeting, at the KCOM in April, saw FC win by 56-12. A win for FC would go a long way to guaranteeing them a play off place, it was a question of who wanted the to points the most.
After a warm blooded opening the Airlie Birds were the first to get the scoreboard moving after eight minutes when the boot of Mark Sneyd found the hands of Bureta Faraimo to score in the corner. Sneyd kicked brilliantly from the touchline for a 6-0 lead.
On fifteen KR were back level after a fifty metre break culminated in an Adam Quinlan grubber kick which was picked up brilliantly off his shoelaces by Ben Crooks who threw demmy and went outside the last line of defence to score. Ryan Shaw added the conversion to level the scores.
There was little to choose between the two sides for the remainder of the first half. Both sides had opportunities, but neither could convert into points.
Nine minutes after the restart the home side took the lead when a Josh Drinkwater grubber was collected and grounded under the sticks by Joel Tomkins. Shaw added the conversion for 12-6, the perfect start to the sedon half for Tony Smiths side.
Fifteen minutes from time Andre Savelio stumbled over the line after a fast passing move from FC to drop over the line for Hull’s second try. Sneyd hit the near post with his conversion attempt, froma seemingly easy position, his side still two points adrift.
Matt Parcell sealed the Rovers win aftwer taking a Mitch Garbutt pass to dive over the line from two metres out, lifting his new side to tenth in the league and pushing his team mates from last weekend at the Leeds Rhinos down to the bottom of the table. Shaw added the conversion, in off the far upright, for an 18-10 win to the red and white side of the city.
This was a massively important win for Hull KR, and a return to sporadic form for FC. There were plenty of errors from both sides but it was KR who knuckled down, held their nerve, and translated their desire into the two points to lift them two places in the league after an uncomfortable week at the bottom.
