Gary Schofield’s retirement from journalism due I’ll health is a sad announcement. Not my favourite FC player because of his antics in getting transferred to Loiners. Controversial at the least but always spoke with passion. Watching a skinny 18 year old skin players left and right was a joy to behold and he played with probably one of the best FC teams ever and didn’t look out of place alongside the Kiwis, Toppy and Knocker. Enjoy your retirement “The original Judas”

He was a brilliant player for us, wasn't as effective when moved to stand off IMO but tore it up down under when he went there but never reached the heights at leeds he should have. Unfortunately he was as well known for his off field antics and then his ridiculous opinions all of which detracted from a great playing career

Likes to be controversial and loved been the panto villain whenever he came back here but one of very few in the media who held the Hull players to account last season like they should have been.

I’ve not seen the announcement but very sad to hear that he’s in ill health and wish him luck.

It's very sad news. One of my favourite players from the early '80s. What an amazing debut season he had - 37 tries in 33 games. In total 107 tries and almost 200 goals for Hull in just 122 games.

His and Crooksy's departures marked the end of an era. I don't hold any ill will towards him for it. In recent years he has been a strong critic of the club and how it's been run. Actually echoing what the supporters have been saying. He has a genuine affection for Hull though, he always says we are his second club after Leeds and he wants us to be successful.

I wish him and his family well.

Some players have a certain something that everyone else can do but they can do it better and it's a speciality and they are a real one off. Garry was the best interceptor of a ball I have ever seen and will probably ever see, he was the master of it and had amazing anticipation especially when he was out in the centre. opposition players knew what he was going to do but seemed to be unable to do anything about it. Never liked him as a pundit or as a journalist controversy for the sake of it was my interpretation of all that but no one wants to see anyone retire through ill health and I really do wish him well. This brain damage business amongst old players is becoming too frequent and it's so tragic and the description of an eye op leading to him losing his eye and the likelihood of oncoming dementia is frankly heartbreaking stuff .

Let's hope the new head injury protocols stop this from happening in the future to current players

Very sad news..was amazing for us when he burst onto scene as a young kid..saw him the day after challenge cup win in 2016 in the Irish pub in King’s Cross,he saw us and came over and first thing he said was “that will shut them red n white b*stads up eh lads”
All was forgiven at that point…

Such sad news.

Garry was a brilliant player. In my 50 years as a Hull supporter, he is an absolute shoe in at Centre in my all time Hull FC Dream Team.

In addition to DW’s mention of his interception exploits, Garry had a telepathic relationship with Lee Crooks. He would follow Lee’s drive ins and wait for the off load and race away.

A great player for GB too. I hope the Club make him Guest of Honour when we play Leeds at home next season so we can give him a fitting retirement send off.

A tough and at times harsh journalist with regards to Hull, however most of his views on the club in recent seasons have proved correct.

I wish Garry well for his toughest season yet.

P.S please can some one amend the title of this thread to the correct spelling of Schofield?
