Mental day that one. I think there was some building work going on at the time and someone decided to leave all the rubble nearby.
I remember Moira Stewart on BBC news reporting on the violence on TV.
At least we got a song out of it :D

Yeah, Good Friday '81. I too was stood at Airlie Street end (my usual spot, which is why I sit in South Stand today I guess, same viewpoint!). I seem to recall Paul Woods kicking a penalty around half-way through the first-half, and as the ball went through the posts I saw a brick flying through the air! About two minutes later it was utter mayhem, something resembling a riot in Belfast or Derry that we used to see on the news in those days.

I remember an old-feller being taken down the tunnel with blood pouring down his face. Think the game was halted for around twenty minutes, but not wholly sure on that. Think the game finally ended with a one-point win for rovers courtesy of a late Phil Lowe try, but again my memory is a touch sketchy on this. The rumour doing the rounds afterwards was that it was City fans who had started it!! Seeing as City had barely enough fans at that time to start a fight in a phone box, I think that might be one rumour well wide of the mark.

Fun days!!!!






I've been on the internet and have already got a sense of the fans' passion for the club. They are very fanatical - Peter Gentle 12th September 2011.

Money doesn't talk it swears, Obscenity who really cares, Propaganda all is phony.

I'm the son and heir of a shyness which is criminally vulgar.

Well it definitely started at Gordon Street End, and that's where they were stood, so as guilty as a three week old puppy sat next to a pile of poop!!! :o :o

Crooksie going between the posts under the nigjt sky at Elland Road below a rammed Spion Kop full of Hull fans was also class, then us beating Rovers in the John Player at Headingley are other standouts early 80's memories.


I remember it well. Crooks scored right in front of me. As you say it was absolutely rammed. We were packed in pens like cattle. Scary when you think about it now.

The John Player Final was the Ronnie Wileman blind side try.

I remember a big Rovers fan who live down Camden street having a beer keg from Supporters club thrown through his window in 1980 . :D
