One of the things that bugs me with Houghton, that he did on a couple of occasions last night, is that when he scoots he picks up the first 10 metres then randomly turns 90 degrees and starts running sideways, then passes the ball 10 metres back again to the first receiver. That means we're right back at the advantage line anyway, and lost any momentum Houghton gained from his initial scoot.
He's lost all the speed to be able to break through behind the ruck but he's still better off just taking the tackle and getting a quick play the ball while the defence is still retreating.
I know you can argue that the rest of the team should be pushing up with him (and yes, they should) but sometimes they're not, so don't try and force the pass to somebody, just take the metres he's already earned and play the ball.
