Dave K. wrote:Just read some snippets from Briers, if that isn't a come and get me message I don't know what is.

Think he'd he an excellent choice, links to the area, worked in two of the best environments in the world. Connections in SL and the NRL.

Knows Myler too.

Now waiting for him to reject us

Think Lee Briers could be good for us, although it would still represent a gamble as it would be his first major coaching role, as a head coach at any rate.

The bigger question, however, is would we be good for him and would he view us as a risk worth taking at this stage in his, still early, coaching career. Putting myself in his shoes, I would need some pretty serious persuading from Myler about where the club is going before I committed.

A Myler-Briers combination would certainly be an interesting proposition, given their lack of experience in their respective roles, but in truth I don't see it happening. Think it would be a 'thanks, but no thanks' reply from Briers, and therein lies our problem. Who, out there, can be persuaded to take on arguably the biggest challenge in SL.

I've been on the internet and have already got a sense of the fans' passion for the club. They are very fanatical - Peter Gentle 12th September 2011.

BP1 wrote:My gut feeling is that, realistically, this is the recruitment area we are going to have to aim for, at least as far as the next appointment is concerned.

The talk of Briers/M. McGuire/Holbrook is fanciful wishing on our part I think. I feel that, right now in 2024, we are too great a risk for candidates of that nature to put their reputations on the line. The only way any one of those three will pitch in with us is if Myler can persuade them that we are a club on the move upwards once more and sell the club as an exciting prospect to be developed thereby enticing someone of that calibre to join us, or Pearson/Myler put a colossal salary on the table!

I hate to say it, but I think either Danny Ward or Danny McGuire (or Martin Gleeson?) would be our most realistic target. Whether any of them would take up the 'chalice' is another matter.
It's not as if we've temporarily lost our way any are simply in need of someone to steer the ship into calmer waters. We have fallen so far backwards that the job of resurrecting the club looks massive, it will be a brave (or desperate) soul that feels confident enough to want to take it on.

I wouldn't be too despondent if it was either Ward or McGuire taking over (that's just a realistic view from me on where we are right now). Maybe one of those can at least steer us upwards a touch, making us seem to be a more attractive choice in 2/3 years time for someone else to take over the reins.

I'm afraid we may have to walk (slowly) at first before we can contemplate running at full pelt once more. We are where we are for a reason and the road back is a long way ahead of us. I hope I'm wrong on this, but I honestly don't see any white knight in shining armour steaming in to rescue us and lead us to the summit. This is going to take an extraordinarily amount of hard work just to put us back on an even keel, before we can even think about challenging at the top again.

I agree with this. I think first of all we will end up with a coach who might just get us back to mid table mediocrity. Once other candidates realise we're a bit more stable then we may have a better chance at landing a guy who can then take us up the next level into a regular playoff team and occasional challengers.
I just don't think Briers would take the job. He's obviously put a lot of work in before making the step up to head coach. Of his first job is Hull and we continue to he as garbage as we are then his reputation as a head coach could take an immediate hit, despite the failings not actually been (majority) his fault.

Roam Ranger wrote:You keep mention that we are bin dipping. Maybe there's a reason for that? Just because we potentially have money doesn't mean we can go out and get quality and exciting names. Even if we send Myler out to Oz we are going to be a hard sell. We're going to need to put in one hell of a sales pitch about our potential if we are to attract quality or an exciting names. Or throw them a serious amount of cash. And even that might not be enough given our current plight.

So maybe we have to go for "average" players right now and in the immediate future because the reality is we are second from bottom of the league and have been on a downward trajectory for some time now. Maybe we have to start with players that can come in and do a job for us, take the players that actually want to be here, and build from there. Even if it takes time.

Agree. Because of where we are at this moment, we are going to have to walk before we can even think about running, and it will most likely be a slow walk at that to begin with!

We have fallen so far backwards since 2017 that anyone, even half decent, is likely to give us a wide berth until we can create an air around the club that we seem to be moving in an upward direction once more. If it takes a bunch of 'average' players to do that, then I'm afraid that is where we are right now, there is no escaping our predicament, no quick fix, no easy solution to the mess we have created for ourselves.

It may be a long hard road back to being even a semi-decent side, but we have to start somewhere because we cannot afford to go any further back than where we are now, because the only destination down that road is oblivion for us.

Totally agree. By his own admission , Briers is still learning the skills of management .
personally , i feel this job of this magnitude ,is too early for him.
This squad needs a total reset, a real back to basics.. focusing on fitness & defence .
Id like Maguire, but he signed,a long contract with NSW.
Holbrook, or Wane would be my preferred choice.

Leigh went from a promoted club to a play off place and Cup winners in one season by recruiting the right players.

Think any coach would be a risk, even an experienced one like Mcdermott and Rowley.

I think we are pretty attractive.

Low start, so only way is up
Grade A license
Excellent academy and youth players
Big investment (think this must be big if we are offering 250k for a coach)
Clean slate with players, massive amount of cap and probably at least 4 quota spots.

Don't think the pressure would be too much first season.

Think our poor few years have dampened the fans expectations a lot.

Can't see any of those three coming.

Leigh, Rovers and Salford are good examples of how you can make quick progress, we also have the academy set up that none of these have.

With the right coach and the right signings I think we could ain for 6th to 8th next year and challenge the year aftet

I would agree with you on this, up to a point. I suspect those three clubs had rather more sturdy foundations on which to build upon than we have right now. By common consent, I think we all agree that the club has been badly run for years from top to bottom and this state of affairs is undermining any chance of the club being back to at least somewhere near to where it should be.

It could be that Myler's appointment turns out to be the first step in the right direction and in years to come we will look back on April 2024 as the time we hit the bottom and turned around, time will tell on that one.

On the playing side, you are right. There isn't a great deal of difference between 6th/7th and 10th/11th. All it takes is for a few results to swing the opposite way and a situation can easily swing from one season to the next. But I still think we need firmer foundations in place and for the club to be run in a different manner to how it has been in recent times for even that small achievement to happen.

I am generally an optimist, always hoping that better times are just around the corner, but over the past six or seven years we have dug ourselves into an almighty hole and we need someone with vision to get us back out of it, and sharpish, before it becomes terminal.

I'd like our new coach to be heavily youth orientated. I'm worried that if there is investment and money available that we will get a coach who just buys players and doesn't invest enough time into the academy and help bring on the younger lads.
While not trying to have a dig, this is the way Rovers have gone. Maybe their kids just aren't good enough, and that's fair enough, but they don't seem to get the chance to show if they're first team ready or not.
There are some huge benefits to a good production line of academy players. After a lot of brilliant work has gone into the youth setup over the last few years I'd hate for it to now be neglected by a coach who would rather try and buy their way.
We have some great prospects through, it would be amazing to get a coach who can turn that potential into actual SL quality players.
I hope it's an area Myler is discussing in great detail when holding talks with candidates.
