Not a fan of the clause myself but we have to be realistic that unless we want aging journeymen who are coming to SL to end or prolong their careers it's something that we have to do to bring the younger players over.
Yes they might have a great season and then leave but we've had the benefit of that, or they could have a great season and decide to stay. I think with Clifford we were just unfortunate that the club that came in for him was his hometown club and he probably feels there's unfinished business there as well as being back home.
If the difference of not having the clause means we'd miss out on a young quality player then I'd rather the club go with the clause, at least the club are being sensible and are aware of the possibility and the risk that poses.
At the end of it if a player signs a 3 year deal but wants to leave after a year its very rare a club makes them stick it out in all honesty, at least the clause gives us a chance of signing players that we probably couldn't without it.
As long as the clause is that they can only go after seeing out the season like Clifford is doing and not going with immediate effect then I can't really see it being too bad a thing as much as I'm not a fan,
