To be fair, they also had 50% to 60% relegation wage decreases in their contracts. So they probably had to put a loan/transfer clause in the player's favour as a compromise.
They've probably saved at least 60m off the wage bill even before the loans. Also, following the relegation, the chances of us recouping any money on some of these players is likely at their lowest, so loaning them gets their wages off the books, and also gives them chance to build up their values again.

The club cannot afford to sell these players below what they paid for them and that is likely what would happen. £120m is a more realistic £80m. Getting the players off the payroll is a god send to the club. Of all the players that have gone which ones would you like to keep?
