A sporting director has been something missing for ages. Anything that prevents another Bernard vanity purchase a la Brent Webb has to be good. Not fussy about a big clearout either. The squad was looking bloated and imbalanced.
There are two ways to refresh things - overhaul the squad or change coach. It's often the latter as it's a lot cheaper and carries less inherent risk.
