Harry Rushton released by Canberra Raiders and heading back over here.

The Canberra Raiders have released Harry Rushton (Raider #382) from the remainder of his contract to return home to England effective immediately.

Rushton, who has been out with a broken jaw since the Raiders NSW Cup match on July 9, has been granted a release from the remainder of this season and the final year of his deal in 2023.

He made his NRL debut earlier this season against the Panthers when he came from the bench in the round seven match at BlueBet Stadium.

Raiders CEO Don Furner said the Raiders thanked Harry for his time at the club and wished him all the best for the future.

“Harry joined us from Wigan at the beginning of 2021 as a young player looking for an opportunity and leaves us a player who has had the opportunity to make an NRL debut this season,” Furner said. “Harry will return home to England to be closer to his family and take up an opportunity closer to home. We wish Harry all the best for the future.”

Has he got something lined up or does he just want to come home? Is he somebody we need at the moment (thinking of his position rather than the player)?

We should be all over this after losing McDonnell and Nicholson. Also KPP in 2024

It's a little predictable really. Might be ok for a teenager to spend a year over there but after that you'd imagine it would be tough so far away from family/friends.

Don't know much about how he's progressed or whether he'd be a good buy for Wigan.

My daughter is a close friend of his from their school days in knott end. She still talks to him now. Says he was really homesick and struggling. Doesn’t know if he has any club lined up yet though

I’ve been hoping for a while that we’ll be talking to him and trying to find out his plans. He’s an absolute must for me with McDonnell and KPP going. He can play anywhere in the pack bar hooker, so is ideal to be able to back up loads of players and fight for a first team place. I’d imagine plenty of clubs will put offers to him however.

Agreed, second row may be a little congested at the moment but looking beyond next year things will open up further with Isa and KPP due to leave.

The quote from Furner reads like he's got something locked in.

Logically, you'd expect that he'd have had his agent at least reach out and see who was interested over here. You'd also hope that we'd have been the 1st option that he'd explore.

I hope we move for him. Move KPP to the centre position and bring Rushton onto the bench. We'll see tho

Wouldn't want to say we should sign him just because he's played a couple of NRL games. Has anyone actually seen him play over the last couple of years?
