Hull FC Win Magical Derby Against Hull KR

The final game of the Magic Weekend was the Hull derby as two sides struggling for form did battle with the Robins taking on the Airlie Birds for local bragging rights. A KR win by more than twenty-seven points would lift them above FC and into sixth place, a win of any description would see then seventh. If FC could get the points, then they would be up to fifth, providing that the win was by four or more points.

Both sides were in dour form, struggling for points, and many supporters were arriving wondering whether it was possible for both sides to lose. The last time that either side won was over a month ago, it didn´t bode well for the game that was bringing down the curtain on an excellent weekend.

The bookies were struggling to distinguish between the two sides, giving FC a two-point start on the coupon and showing KR as slight favourites despite them sacking their coach after last weekend´s loss to Toulouse and lots of changes to both sides.

If we think we’re not then defeat against Wakefield would soon disabuse of that notion.

The team needs to find a ruthless streak from somewhere. I’m getting uncomfortable memories of the 26-24 loss in London and the late winner they got to beat us 16-20 at CP in 2019. Different team, but one thing Tony Smith definitely didn’t bring was a win at all costs mentality, and we really could do with some breathing space now.

Nothing could be worse (as a RL fan, in a single game) than 50-0 at Wembley or the manner of our relegation in 2016. But there are things that could be as bad, and being relegated by defeat at Hull in the last game of the season would be up (down) there. At least 2016 was followed by a cathartic promotion - there’s no guarantee that’d happen again.

Hopefully a fire can be lit this week, so we don’t have face that prospect.

Peters mentioned Rovers playing with aggression recently. Delaney went so far as to express specific hope that we could win games. Maybe next year will be the year we finally stop being so f’in diffident and taking perverse pride in doing the boring bits of RL badly. Hopefully still in the top flight.

You’re the second best right team in Hull yet again but you’re still too good for relegation. Beat Wakefield at the weekend and your as good as safe for another year.
