The reason he has never taken up those offered NRL contracts is because of his family - his eldest has been signed up for Man City for many years and is middle son has recently signed for Man United. He didn't want to deprive them of that life chance.
A winners medal doesn't provide a wage for an extra few years. A new contract does.

And playing 4 or 5 games would cause him to not get a new deal?

As I said, I would have picked him but it sounds to me like Wane wasn't going to.

If he gets injured perhaps not! You don’t know what niggles he may have- or what surgery he may require in the off season! That may put off the whole of the start to next season and impact on his chances to get in the side- as who knows what other contracts have been signed with other players- but he may know that.
You also may not understand where he is coming from emotionally- he is very much a one club man who loves his home town. Paul Reilly went on to get a contract elsewhere in his latter years and hated it- he hated pulling on someone else’s shirt. It didn’t feel right and it showed in his performances.

So is Liam Farrell but he just signed a new deal at Wigan and will play in the World Cup.

He says that 2017 was the pinnacle of his career, so considering how that ended I can't see why he wouldn't want to right that wrong.

I think he's a great player and he has obviously made this decision for reasons none of us will ever probably know, I just find it strange given we are in a WC year and he has a good if not great chance at being in the side. Looking at the squad for weekend he would definitely be in that you would think. Hopefully it isn't something he regrets when he looks back on his career.

The only way that any English player is getting a WC winners medal is, if they make one from gold milk bottle tops.
The final will be Australia v NZ or Tonga.

I agree that it sounds like McGilvary has been told that he's not getting picked though.
This would have been his last chance to perform on the biggest stage and it's not like we have heaps of International games.
You'd think that he would be busting a gut to be included.

I would be very surprised if he wasn't going to be playing. He really wants to win something with Huddersfield before he finishes and he has had bad problems with injury after previous international series. If we weren't going so well this year, he would for sure put himself up for England, he has made a choice, and little chance as Huddersfield has of winning the GF this year, it's a higher chance that England winning WC!

Not at all.
I dont get the retirement thing though. This would definitely have been his last World Cup and on home soil too.
To forego that just seems bizarre but, good look to him. He's been great for you lot for many seasons and has never let anyone down playing for England.

Probably a much better way of saying what I've been trying to say

As shown in last few performances would walk into the England side, still glad he has decided to give his all for Fartown. You heard his reasoning today!
