There should really be no excuse for high tackles & perhaps all clubs should work on getting rid of what can be dangerous play.

Are you agreeing then NB that Union's attempt to outlaw the shoulder upwards tackle with red cards shows more concern for player welfare than League does?

I'd argue that union wants rid of "enveloping" tackles as it slows their game down considerably. Offloading in the tackle is becoming increasingly rare in union and the result is more rucks and mauls to go with the 10 minute scrum reset malarky.

Not sure I agree with that in NH but maybe in your neck of the woods. What is barmy is trialing in the Rugby Championship when a player gets sent off you can replace them after 20 minutes. Crazy.

Can't really comment on any RU rules, don't watch the game or follow it. However if union are taking the no tolerance approach with red cards for player welfare then can't knock em for it. Dont know what constitutes a shoulder upwards tackle!

Ninearches has a point though, it should be down to clubs at all levels to work on improving technique.

Union have a zero tolleranc with head contact. Shoulder upwards refers to a tackle starting at the chest/shoulder area and then sliding up. More and more times now the refs are less lenient regardless of where the tackle starts....if it ends up at neck and head its bathtime.
The 20 minute red card thing is stupid .....but if you look at th statistics, the number of red cards in onion has risen steadily in the pro era and it does often kill a game as a contest when a team is reduced due to a red......I'm with cowboy though....it's a stupid rule
.

One thing is for sure, if Percival's attempt to take Tomkins head off was not a red, then John Dalgreen would love playing today.

If percivals tackle or attempt was a stiff arm, eg trying to take his head off then might agree with you, thing was it wasn't. It was his hand, has it been looked at by disciplinary? Looking back at it, he was stepped by Tompkins, it wasn't a swinging arm it was a grab. Union go red with that now league currently go yellow, mebbee it will change next year who knows.
