Exclusive: The RFL have launched an investigation into Featherstone regarding an alleged breach of Government guidelines after their players and staff mixed indoors in a bar following last week's game against Batley. They could now face severe sanctions.

Featherstone Rovers are facing the prospect of an investigation and potential severe sanctions by the Rugby Football League's compliance department over an alleged breach of Government guidelines following last weekend's Challenge Cup tie with Batley Bulldogs, Rugby League Live can reveal.

The Championship club were formally notified on Wednesday that the RFL were opening an investigation, after receiving photos of Rovers' players and staff congregating in a bar at their Millennium Stadium home in the aftermath of their 30-22 victory against the Bulldogs on Saturday. The RFL have confirmed to Rugby League Live the matter was being investigated.

The photos, which Rugby League Live has seen, show first-team players and senior officials from the club's off-field staff mixing indoors - something which is currently strictly prohibited under Government guidance surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. Rugby League Live has also seen photos of board members inside the ground mixing with members of the public.

Featherstone have now been informed that the RFL will be looking into the matter - and furthermore, Rugby League Live has been told that the Championship side's training session planned for Thursday evening could now be cancelled. That immediately brings into doubt the possibility of them staging their Championship clash with the Bulldogs on Friday evening.

I'd be surprised if it effects the cup game. Unless it leads to a covid breakout amongst the squad.

They will find themselves in real bother though. It's not just a few players having an illegal get together. The club themselves appear to have facilitated it. Big fines coming for sure.

Having the club officials seemingly condoning it makes it a much more serious matter. Idiotic thing to do.

Steve Gill the general manager left Featherstone earlier this week and I understand that was due to the fact he was appalled upon seeing the photos in question.

Even watching the game v Batley I was surprised by the amount of pro Featherstone crowd noise that the mics were picking up clearly
