The ones I hate with a passion are Wigan Warriors, Leeds Rhino's and Bradford Bulls - 3 of our most prestigious clubs reduced to cartoon monikers that have absolutely no history or relevance. I know many will attempt to defend them but deep down I don't think they really believe it.
I ask you this, have any football teams ever seriously attempted this and I'm talking all 90 odd clubs not just the big ones who'd never dream of such sacrilege? To me this is the preserve of wannabe sports who need to get noticed. Please don't tell me it works in America, we are not American!
If i were running the SL the first thing I'd do is call the CEO's in and tell them to restore some dignity. Wigan RLFC, Leeds RLFC, Bradford Northern RLFC...Just like Manchester United FC, Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC. Certainly not Chelsea Super Buns, Liverpool Bin Dippers or Manchester Mank Thunder Dragons.
Not saying I agree or disagree with this as both views have good points. I think in the 90's it was a much needed rebrand and what we especially did with the Bulls and Keighley did with the Cougars brand was brilliant for the sport at the time. Yes it's Americanized to an extent or is it more Australianised? They had teams like Balmain Tigers, Illawarra Steelers, North Sydney Bears, Western Suburb Magpies (tried not including the big ones here either) in the 1980's? For us personally, I think Northern isn't a brand you can take nationally or internationally, but the Bulls is one you can.
Also isn't Manchester United technically a rebrand as they were Newton Heath! (Just having a laugh here).
