Only a matter of time.
It's not really a monkey though, it's not that we are cursed. In my 35 years of watching we have only had a side with a credible chance of winning the league title in 93/94 and 2010/11/12/13/14 (16) (18). We couldn't have expected to win at other times.
So long as we have wealthy backers and decent income, and SL quality continues to diminish, we will do it sooner or later.
In my 57 years of watching, it is only in the super league era that anybody gave a R4ts 4rse about the title of "Champions". In fact most supporters didn't get the concept of being champions, as you could visit any ground in the league and here the chant of "Champions". I remember talking to Alex Murphy when we finished top of the league in 1972-73 and he said, that, from then on we would concentrate on the challenge cup and the John Player trophy, as that was were where the money was. There was very little money in winning the championship and in those days money was crucial to continuation of the club. We have won the end of year play off comp on a several occasions since 1955, but it didn't have the mantle of champions. Did we care, did we b4llocks.

Will we heck win it..didnt you know it's an exclusive club that only as 4 members and one of them got booted out for being naughty...our application form was torn up as was hulls and Castleford...next year I can see saints sitting in the big boys chair whilst another non member bangs on the club door...

I seem to remember in 93/94 (pre Superleage) there was genuine excitement at Wilderspool about the prospect of winnng the league. We finished on the same points as Wigan and Bradford but with inferior points difference in the end.

Even that was sorted in wigans favour by them playing on a Sunday at Oldham.. we played Friday and Bradford Saturday.. should of been all played same day kicking off at same time..we would of been champs had it not been for a certain Russell smith...

Nothing wrong with a bit of banter but this was going way too far. We should be embarrased by that phrase not printing it on a flag. Things like this make it clear to me that a small club mentality still exists within the club and amongst much of the fan base. Ok that's understandable to an extent given where we were only ten years ago, but for a club with realistic aspirations of becoming one of the 'big boys', we need to shake this off now and take ourselves more seriously.
Been saying this for the past few seasons!! Hate the chant, dont chant it myself.........breads defeatism. Sends a signal that were happy with being nearly men. The fact the 'barmy army' are willing to sing it constantly, and effectively laugh at ourselves is quite frankly pathetic considering where the club aspire us to be....on top.......
Like you said...the banter of it initially was a laugh...but now it is just plan embarrassing......
Guys, think I might be on to something here, think I’ve found out where the b@st@rd hangs out

. Before construction of the ship canal, work to improve navigation included Woolston New Cut, bypassing a meander, and Howley Lock for craft to avoid the weir; the new cut and lock are still evident. The island formed between the weir and the lock is known locally as "Monkey Island".
