Like I say I only saw about half the game, it is a problem with Dixon, if he makes a mistake early on it tends to effect his whole game. Some really basic mistakes errors and silly play made the leeds score flattering, certainly think they eased off late on which made the broncos score line look better, but 12 Point win for leeds probably fair. Leeds are a class squad but they looked poor, shown with the penalties they gave away! With Broncos at there best, I feel they would have beaten that leeds team yesterday! But broncos were far from that, I would not imagine wardy was happy. Toronto is going to be interesting! I think they are faltering a bit and are beatable but broncos need to get the set completion rate back up to 80% plus to stand any chance, same against Toulouse, both those teams will capitalise on free mtrs.
The crowd was great, salford crowd depends on how both teams fair the 2 games before, if we are still on 2 points and Salford have kicked on then it could be a dead robber nearly, if we are on 4 or 6 then interest will be high. Halifax will not bring many at all.
Positives: Good crowd, great banter and a chance to catch up with mates (including the one who first brought me to a game)! Negatives: At 16-0 I feared for us......did we even have a centre/winger on the right hand side? Dixon? Really...if he's the answer then it was a stupid question.....Leeds did take their foot off the gas at the end and the score was respectable, but we'll need to be back at an 80% completion rate and no errors in Canada...
JESUS WEPT HOW MANY TIMES????? £20 a ticket and £15 on beer and merchandise.....so an away fan is worth £35. At best, 1,000 is the average away support split across 11 rounds and I am being really generous here, so Toronto, replacing say Wakefield will cost a SL club £35,000. The minimum turnover of a SL club is £4,000,000 so Toronto instead of Widnes is worth less than 1% of a SL clubs turnover.
There are many valid reasons for and against expansion into America, but "AWAY FANS" isn't one of them.
Criticisms- team picked the wrong game to put in one of their poorest performances of the season. I've always been a fan of both Dixon and Hellewell but the lack of anything approximating a right side defence in the first half did for us yesterday.Too many needless errors, players looking too flat footed. receiving the ball but not being mobile, many plays far too predictable, left side not really used except in the second half, plenty of Leeds scores being gifted to them after stupid London mistakes. Can't remember seeing an 8 point try before.
Praise - can't fault the workrate of some of the players second half, at last they looked like they wanted to put on a bit of a show for the fans although the game was lost by the halfway point. Nice to see Hindmarsh get his first try, I've been impressed with him this season. Good crowd, including a number of first timers that I spoke to - they certainly seemed to enjoy the atmosphere ( chanting, drumming etc..) of a league game. Looks like the club had made an effort to run what looked to be a more professional ship yesterday with some of the sponsors involved, although I'm guessing LBSA members were helping out selling programmes etc.. Good to see pies on the food menu!
Shame we didn't turn up for the first 40 mins against a far from full strength Leeds side. After 10 mins I was fearful of losing by a cricket score! If we'd played to our best I think we could really have pushed them ,the score flattered us a bit but I was pleased to see the lads giving it a go til the end. I think the only real difference I saw was how Leeds were much quicker closing down after PTB, and they tended to pass the ball TO their teammates where we frequently seemed to be passing AT our teammates. They may have struggled this season but playing top drawer opposition all season obviously gave Leeds the edge - we've only really been given a game by the about half the teams in our division, and have won some games by 30+ points without really breaking sweat.
All in all a good day out despite the result - and M25 traffic causing me to miss the young 'uns game AGAIN! Pity we can't draw crowds like that more often, Trailfinders had a bit of a buzz about it yesterday. Hope some of the folk who came as first timers will come back for the other 8s games.
