In any case after Leigh is thoroughly walloped by Toronto Wolfpack, and perhaps even by Toulouse, any RFL interest in having Leigh in Super League again for a single futile year will have been fully extirpated.
Actually, a few good thrashings used to be one of the criteria for entry to Super League, in the good old days of licensing. Just ask Widnes! Even lowly Leigh used to delight in administering those thrashings.

Back to the point - Burnham seems like one of the few genuinely decent politicians, and has a bit of profile, so it's better to have him involved in any capacity rather than not at all. His track record suggests he gets things done, so hopefully he'll involve himself in helping grow the game, from grass roots through to mainstream media at the top level.

Even more so, as an Everton fan.
During his time as MP for Leigh, he did one heck of a lot for the town. OK, his reputation benefited from that, but so did the town. He is currently working his whatsits off to attack the homeless problem in Greater Manchester. Whatever you think of his political persuasion, or his obvious bad taste in the RL team he supports, he does get things done.

He does I agree but also agree with others that highlight what exactly is this role and does it mean anything in reality?

Andy Burnham is far from a decent politician.
He is currently presiding over one of the most corrupt police command teams in the country, and has been provided with huge amounts of evidence concerning multiple serious crimes and has so far done absolutely nothing about it.
He is great at shouting out corruption and making waves when he isn't the one that has to act.
When he is charge, however, he cowers and fails to act.
