they have been declining for years, probably due to the aussie cap. 2015 saw some great stuff still being played. leeds were a joy to watch, some of the rugby was breathtaking.
last year was pretty average across the board. this year has been the same.
I have to say the refs haven't helped. last night he was awful, penalty after penalty. they don't let games flow.
its the basics that annoy me. the amount of simple, stupid errors in games. drop ball after drop ball, passes misplaced.
of course its always happened to the best of players.
but its happening so much. its very rare you get the end to end games that have you on the edge of your seat.
you used to, as a neutral, look forward to saints v warrington, wigan v saints etc. the games, for me anyway, just aren't as exciting.

I'd agreed with that, last night he gave 20 penalties, that wasn't a 20 penalties game for me and in the Wakey vs Leigh game they had 21. Bentham was whistle happy at the start of Friday too and had given 7 penalties in the opening 20 mins which again seemed to high for what was actually happening out on the pitch.

Also too much emphasis on the wrestle in the tackle. Too many games decided by which team slowed down the PTB better. For me this really crept in when the likes of Michael Maguire and Nathan Brown came over several years and focused their teams on it so much.

Cas this year and ourselves two years ago (with a. pretty similar team to now) show you can still produce entertaining rugby regardless of the arguments about the SC and not getting the same level of overseas player.

yes that's right. the emphasis on the wrestle has slowed the game down. whilst you don't want a scoot based game there has to be a balance.

I'd make the touch judges responsible for policing the offside, and leave the ref to police the PTB.
The ref in the England Samoa game was pretty rubbish at times, but he let it flow, and it was all the better for it.

I agree, the biggest problem with the game as a spectacle is the ruck, between the offence trying to 'win' a penalty and defence trying to slow it down its a mess. Refereeing in general seems in a poor state, with refs either trying to stamp authority or willing to let most things go. Some interpretations aren't helping either. Both the penalties Golding got for being tip tackled last night weren't penalties imo.

I'd say in general teams are much more risk averse and all do exactly the same thing, with exceptions being us in the treble year and Cas this year, which means there's less variety in what you are watching.

I want to see more great expansive play like that which led to Burrow diving in at the corner, rugby that makes you jump from your seat that is why we all watch or began watching RL, it's why Cas have been such a breath of fresh air so far this year.

Clearwing wrote:Hopefully we can maintain a bit of momentum though with that kind of performance it's hard to see how. None the less, there's a chink of daylight beginning to appear between the top four and the rest. Be nice if we could extend that gap further while other teams are injury hit or bang out of form. Long way off yet but if we were to make top four along with cas, hull and Salford we'd have a puncher's chance in the play offs. I'd much prefer that scenario to finding ourselves in with the likes of wigan and wire if I'm honest.

Obviously haven't been in the best form in our last two games but it was only a few weeks ago Hull looked in a bit of a mess with two heavy home losses. Even Cas are throwing in the odd defeat. Next round of SL is the Magic Weekend, tough one for us to play Cas but even a defeat isn't the end of the world. The Hull/Saints and Wigan/Wire games are crucial for the latter teams who really need to win to keep top 4 hopes alive.

Interesting to see how long Salford can keep up at the top, two very winnable games coming up for them.

Little side note from yesterdays game, with that win we've now won more points (18) than we did all of last years regular season.

At the start of the game, I think it was O'connor on the commentary that said Catalans missed 35 tackles in their last game, and how poor that was, and if they did that again they would be beaten easily again. They just got beat, but incredibly missed a further four more. That is horrendous defending.

We ourselves missed 34 tackles, which is so close to the stat O'connor was talking about before the game. McGuire and Sutcliffe 8 missed tackles between them is bordering on embarrassment at this level of rugby.

My concern before the game with Garbutt missing was the metres to be made. In the most part, nothing to worry about as some forwards gave a big account of themselves here and really made the yardage. However, I said during the game, the tactic of JJB taking so many hit ups was poor, and the fact he had the lowest average gain than 32 other players highlights that further.

There is not a side in Super League that would have made the top 8 just a couple of years back, dont know why it has gone backwards so much, but end of the day I would bet not many had us down for a win still at Catalans this year.

I would agree with that the standards are appalling for FT professionals the only side who play a style to you enjoy watching are Cas and maybe they look better than they are because their opponents are so dire

Your job is to say to yourself on a job interview does the hiring manager likes me or not. If you aren't a particular manager's cup of tea, you haven't failed -- you've dodged a bullet.

Only one penalty was given against JJB

Not sure if it is a tactic for JJB to make so many carries. I think as the most enthusiastic player he is just usually the one to be there first. Did he play the full 80 last night? Also in fairness he made 2 offloads which can limit the average gain stats. while Galloway, Singleton, Delaney, Mullally and Oledski made none. I do think however that some of the other forwards, notably Singleton, should be stepping up and making more carries but I do not think they have the same stamina as JJB
