Southpaw - I like Jake Gylenhall, I like sports movies and I like boxing; but I didn't like this. In an attempt to make a Rocky film without all the tawdry sentimentality, they made a Rocky film packed full of tawdry sentimentality - but with more swearing. The big difference however was that unlike Rocky, the main character was desperately unlikeable.

Warcraft - The Beginning. If, like Duncan Jones, you're one of the 100 million people who've had a WoW account at some point, you'll come at this with a ready made understanding of the lore, history and characters that are portrayed; indeed, it's so true to the game, that you'll even recognise some of the cities and streets in which it takes place. Sadly though, that isn't enough to make this a good film - despite the massive budget and years of post-production, the film is flat and uninvolving; on second thoughts, maybe that's *because* of the years of post-production? Stunning VFX don't make you empathise and root for a character, story does, and whilst this certainly has one, it's so convoluted and daft, that it fails to grip.

As a recovered WoW addict, I really wanted to like this - and I did like some elements - but LoTR it most certainly is not. A reluctant 6/10.

The Resurrection of Jake the snake: I found this on Netflix. A real heart-breaking, uplifting story about the struggles of addiction. I was balling my eyes out at the end, I challenge anyone to watch and not be moved by it.

Revenant - hard work, relentlessly grim, but worthy of the 3 Oscars. Brilliant, but bleak.

Ghostbusters: I was always sceptical about how this would turn out, but I saw a couple of decent reviews so I thought I'd give it a chance. I shouldn't have bothered. It's terrible. I don't think I've ever seen a film where everything seemed so forced, particularly the humour. It tries really REALLY hard to be funny, and it just fails, to the point where it's not just unfunny, but annoying.

The BFG - we're one the many families with very fond memories of reading Roald Dahl books with the kids, so for the first time in several years, all 4 of us went to see this together; even the 17 year old, who I'm sure would rather have been drinking cider in a bus shelter with his 'squad.'

Steven Spielberg has done a great job of capturing the gentle, quirky whimsy of the book, and Mark Rylance is brilliant as the BFG; there's CGI, because he's not 24 feet tall in real life, but it's CGI that doesn't distance you from the character. All 4 of us loved it, and there aren't many films that can manage that any more. Lovely stuff - 9/10.

Not as bad as some of the critics reviews. Some numpty on 5 live with Edith bowman yesterday must have watched a different film.

Little character development and a really boring script and dialogue. At times plenty of pace and action

I so wanted this to be deadpool but it's not. 5/10 but my 12 year old daughter gave it 9. Plus she wants a baseball bat for xmas.

Tallulah (2016)

Ellen Page plays a drifter who rescues/kidnaps a baby from a neglectful mother. Nothing ground breaking, but a well made film. Ellen Page is terrific, as is Allison Janney. A solid 7 and a half out of 10.

Say hello to yesterday, a musty little number full of class acting from Jean Simmons and we'll done in the modern day type of extra drenking.
