City of Hull Academy grind to first win in Wakefield friendly

AN impressive and gritty performance from the newly branded City of Hull Academy earned them their first victory in their new colours at a freezing Rapid Solicitors Stadium against Wakefield.

Taking the game 34-14, the visitors defended well throughout the contest, with game star Mike Adlard scoring a brace of tries in an exciting display.

The City of Hull academy fielded twenty players in total, with ten of those FC ring fenced, eight KR ring fenced and two trialists.

Head coach James Webster made no secret of the youth at his disposal, with a squad largely consisting of first years heading to West Yorkshire.

The hosts started in the ascendency but strong defence from the visitors repealed them. The opening stages were closely fought, and after defending their line City of Hull were to strike first through centre Joe Wardill - running a perfect line to storm over.

A penalty on the last tackle gave Wakefield a further opportunity to respond, but brilliant Hull defence kept them out.

Mistakes though crept in, and the hosts punished their opposition with Remy Grieson scoring in the corner, with a missed conversion keeping Hull's lead at 4-6.

Wakefield then knocked on from the kick off, but Hull failed to capitalise as a scrappy first half endured.

A lack of completion rates soured an error struck contest, but the game struck into life with speedster Adlard racing away following an interception for an eye catching try.

The City of Hull Academy finished the first half strongly, with a swift cut out ball from vibrant half back Bobby Downs finding Harry Hutchinson for their third score.

Both conversions were missed, but daylight between the two sides occurred at 4-14.

Wakefield then struck back superbly as Remi Geirson grabbed his second try from a sweeping back line move, but a second conversion striking the upright meant Hull took a marginally deserved 14-8 lead into the break.

In almost sub zero temperatures conditions were ever worsening in West Yorkshire, as Bradley Spriggs started to throw his weight round from the interchange with some great hits.

Not that his sides physical authority at the time settled matters, with the hosts levelling through Harry Hiddlestone, brilliantly collecting a McGretton chip, who in turn levelled the scores at 14-a-piece from the tee.

A tense second half offered few openings, and it took some sublime footwork from stand in fullback Adlard to break away from a kick return, earning his side a penalty in the process.

Such efforts were rewarded, with Callum Baker scooting over on a last tackle play from the resulting field position. The hooker then converted for a 14-20 lead.

The visitors were starting to pull away, with back to back sets earning Charlie Cartmell the opportunity to power over, despite half back Bobby Downs suffering a shoulder injury.

A dubious score for the City of Hull then followed, with the impressive Adlard getting his second score of the night, with the conversion neatly added from the touch line.

At 30-14 Hull eased the game out, with Lloyd Gurnell storming over for yet another try.

The visitors were well worth their lead, with an assertive second half performance giving them a fine victory against stellar opposition.

City of Hull Academy: Hutchinson, Poskitt, Buchanan, Wardill, Adlard, Fitzgerald, Downs, Butler, Baker, Smith, Wardell, Cator, Gurnell. SUBS: Spriggs, Pickering, Bennett, Moran, Cartmell, Stephenson, Wainwright.

Tries: Wardill, Adlard 2, Hutchinson, Baker, Cartmell, Gurnell.

Goals: 3/7

Well you may throw your rock and hide your hand
Workin' in the dark against your fellow man
But as sure as God made black and white
What's down in the dark will be brought to the light

There is a lot of unfamiliar names there, are eligible players like Litten, HTW and Reece Dean etc being kept for the reserves team ?

You know I've always been a dreamer

I would guess so, although I think it was a friendly so maybe they were trying out a few fringe players. Out of the 20 man squad, 10 were hull, 8 Rovers and 2 trialists.

You could also add Clavering, Lane and Silk to the above list.

Be good to know which players are ring fenced for which side.

City of Hull Academy: Hutchinson (KR), Poskitt (FC), Buchanan (FC), Wardil (KR) etc.

10 are FC , 8 are KR and 2 trialists

The ones I know are

KR are Hutchinson, Wardill, Cator, Stephenson, Moran

FC are Poskitt, Buchanan, Fitzgerald, Downs, Wardell, Spriggs, Cartmell

Adlard was playing for FC last year but may be classed as a trialist

Under 15's 16-16 draw against Wigan.

Under 16's lost 18-22 against Castleford.

Is Hodgson the new Griffin, or is it all about pace?

Yes one of my prodigys got the equalising try in the u15s. Tough game v a well drilled tough tackling Wigan.

Have seen the 13 before playing for Siddall, his name to bookmark is Morgan Smithies.

U19s at home thus Saturday 12:00 v Hudds, playing at West Hulls ground on North Rd

Got a draw with Huddersfield today in a seesaw game. Hat trick for Oakes and a try for Zeus Silk, always loved that name.

COHA went 18 up but Huddersfield pulled it back second half, late tries clawed the draw for us.

Oakes looked fast and strong, similar to a young Tom Lineham but slimmer. Only first year academy so can see why KR have gone for him early, interesting to see him tested at higher level.

Will Jubb had another good game at 9 , then 13 when his brother Tom come on. Heard he's going full time so maybe another SL debut for a Hull Wyke lad in the cards

Some very good talent in our town Hutchie, nothing better then seeing a young player chasing a dream.
